Hi Everyone,

My 1st post in this section of Mybroadband so be gentle.

As mentioned I have a Canon 40D and am looking for a wide angle lens, my requirements are as follows;

Affordable (Hobbyist)
Wide Enough to still provide a wide angle shot even with the 1.6x Multiplier
Dont want a fish eye look

The purpose of the lens is to take a broad range of shots, Sports, Portrait, Social gatherings and landscape. If you have any suggestions in Focal length and brand I would be most grateful.

Regards

Sigma 10 - 20mm f/3.5 EX-DC HSM?

Orms has the "Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM" listed at around R900 cheaper than the F3.5 - though if you are every thinking of upgrading to a full-frame then be wary of those DC lenses. They are intended for the smaller sensors. Personally I have a Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 EX DG Aspherical - which I lurv (except for not being able to put a filter on it cause the glass is a bit bulbous in the front) - that lens is going for around R9700 @ orms

On a brighter note - from BHPhoto .. it is only R6510 (@ R7.57 = $1) - even with shipping and vat, it comes in almost the same as that 10-20 DC lens. Warranted it is 2mm less wide (which on a canon is the difference between 15mm and 19.2mm at the wide end - using a factor of 1.6 )

Update: Re-reading your post - I see you want to use it for sports. Are you sure you need something THAT wide for sports. Cause with something that wide you really do get a lot of "picture" in your frame, so, unless you are really close to the sports, you might have problems. For social gatherings a wide angle is great. Also watch out with the on-board flash - sometimes it isn't wide enough to cover your lens' field properly - so you should experiment a bit first.

I'm very happy with my Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM. Had it on the 40D, loved it. Now using it on the 50D, still love it. It's good enough to keep up with the 50D's resolution.
