Canon EOS 7D introduced

What's the price?
You gotta admit the camera is somewhat of an anomaly.
The specs are new and enviable. High price pitch is understandable.
The current B&H price is $1699 vs $1054 for the 50D.

Local they are priced at +- R26 000 with the kit lens.

I was curious and got local prices.
7D Body
Kit Lens(EFS mount)
70-200L F4 IS

but for the same price which includes shipping and custom fees

you can get the following from B&H
7D Body
17-40L F4 lens
70-200L F4 lens
16Gb UDMA6 (90mb/s) Memory Card
Manfrotto 055XPROB Tripod with BallHead and case (support 5kg)

R22.5k at SA Camera but still exorbitantly priced imo. I saved r13k on the camera that I bought in Germany and their VAT is 19%. (Surprisingly the camera cost less there than it would have from B&H)

Now give me this with a full frame sensor.
Fine if they want to have one model that does and one that doesn't, but if only one model is going to have significant video capabilities it should have a sensor close to the size used for movies.

I don't really care if they take away the video - I have no interest in it. My beef with the 5DmkII is that it doesn't have a built-in flash, and it has the old AF from the 20D.

Clearly many people do care about the video. This camera offers the possibility of an excellent stills camera combined with a really good video camera. Pity it can't autofocus while filming.

For Koffie: Played around with my BiL's 5d2 last week, and will *never* be able to move off a 1.6x camera for wildlife. I was in the ODP shop the week before last and played around with the menus and settings on the 7d - it certainly is very high on my wishlist at the mo.

I really dont miss not having a built in flash - besides, if you can carry a 5D you can carry a Speedlite 270EX. :)

OK, so I have to eat my words.

Hands-on from dpreview.com

The long and short of it:

  • 18MP crop sensor
  • 8fps without battery grip
  • Improved AF
  • 100% 1.0x viewfinder with some funky overlays
    [*]Wireless flash control built in
  • 24fps HD video

In short, they're taking on the D300S.
Can anyone confirm that this (wireless flash control) operates in the same way as using one speedlite to trigger a remote speedlite? IOW that the pop up flash needs to be fired.

Yes, pop ip flash is used to trigger the slaves and it works exactly like using a 580ex II. Works really well too.
Thanks - my old sigma plays really nicely with my new speedlite so I'm hoping it will continue to do so with both flashes off the camera. I know its not a real substitute for something like a pocket wizard but seems handy.

I wonder how they manage to avoid the on board flash having an impact on the image (if you should so desire). Timing?

From what I have seen setting the 580 II to not fire the onboard/master flash it fires a small preflash and then the slaves are triggered. Tested the same thing with the 7D and works exactly the same. It's pretty awesome because you NEVER have to have the onboard flash, be it pop up or speedlite, fire as well. It's also actually surprising how easily the flash triggers a slave. I actually want to test it with a flash outdoors and placing a flash behind the subject for a bit of rim lighting. I'm sure I'll need to put something white to the side to bounce the flash behind the person to trigger the slave tho.

All the features of the 580 are on the 7D, ratios for the different groups etc.

Only thing I'm sad about is my 5D can't do it. So for any setups I'll be using the 7D now... which is not really a bad thing. :)
Makes sense. Thanks. Sounds like there is a fair bit of control afforded.

I've got a couple of fun events coming up in the next month where I might secret a couple of flashes around the venue and see what happens . . . as long as replacing the batteries isnt too much of a mission. :D

When the 400mm fell through I found myself with some surplus finds so I got the IS version of the 300mm (originally I was getting the less expensive NonIS but they just got one in that weekend and haggled with me over skype :)), the TC and the body.

Speaking of flash and pre-flash, for those who know: If I understand the flash system correctly, it fires a pre-flash to meter, and then again at the correct power along with the shutter. So, if I use a diffuser, which loses some light, it shouldn't matter, because based on the pre-flash, the camera should adjust flash power appropriately.

But this is not what I experience. I got myself a diffuser for my Sigma EF-530 DG Super a while back because I was asked to do a group picture in our company's lobby, which is littered with reflective surfaces, so I thought softening and spreading the light somewhat would help, which it did. But I had to push the exposure compensation on the flash by about 2-2.5 stops before I got a correct exposure that looked right on the screen/histogram, and even then I ended up pushing it even further in post to get it to look right.

Is this normal?
