Cape Independence!

I don't think independence will happen, but i do think the province will become like states in the US with its own set of sub laws etc which may differ quite a bit from national laws. Question is how much scope for this is allowed in SA constitution?

2ndly Da really has everything to play for, they pull off a good job and then other provinces will vote with. Ironically its not in the best interests of anc to get involved as if they are caught the Da has a free hand at laying the blame with failures on them.(i wonder if their alliance members might pull something)

Ideally yes but the 66% of voters that nearly gave the ANC a 2/3 majority certainly don't vote along the lines of "doing a good job".

capetownguy : We're still a relatively young democracy and our electorate are not decently educated yet...

This voting along party lines, and racial lines will start to diminish over time, as has already started to happen in areas, and the electorate will start to vote with the party they think will do the best job.

Good luck to all of you in SA with that. We'll kindly leave this union. ;)
How you doing today Toxic?

Just as a btw Cape-Independence...

We're not a Union and haven't been since 1961....

Ok, if you know we're a republic then why do you refer to it as a Union?... They're to VERY different political entities.

"SA will be run by traditionally black parties, and I have a feeling the Cape Parties predominant membership is white (which is another reason I doubt the WC will ever get independence), so should the independence issue happen, the WC will pretty much constantly be at war with SA due to the racial tensions."

Toxicbunny: Do white people make up the majority in the WC? No. Im enjoying reading your debate here but you gotta realise youre not going to convince these guys against Cape Independence? Is this all so that you can get someone to explain things better for you? You dont agree with it, thats clear and thats cool. We do though.

"Ok, if you know we're a republic then why do you refer to it as a Union?"

A: Obviously we dont see ourselves part of the republic. A union as I understand are two seperate areas joined by whatever politics. We still see the Cape as that other seperate area.

Toxic, your nitpicking bru. Lighten up. I asked you how you doin...

CapeNat: do you know about the Cape Party?

Emphasis on over time. In the short term though, a good job in the Western Cape, will not translate to a significant shift in voting patterns.

"Trying to get secession for the WC will honestly just hurt the WC and SA in the long run. SA will be run by traditionally black parties, and I have a feeling the Cape Parties predominant membership is white (which is another reason I doubt the WC will ever get independence), so should the independence issue happen, the WC will pretty much constantly be at war with SA due to the racial tensions."

Wow those are dramatic words, who are you trying to scare? If anyone is thinking of provoking a 'war', as you put it, it would be on the part of the government as the people who are for Cape secession want it done peacefully. Ofcourse the government will try every tactic to bully the people of the Cape into submission but in the end freedom will prevail.

Cape Indep: Ofcourse!!! Spreading the word like a wildfire around the garden route.

Hmm Cape-Independence and CapeNat both don't use the quote feature and CapeNat has two posts both in this thread. Never seen nicks like that before either, weird?

Besides that Cape independence will be awesome.

Trust me we're not the same guy, just "met" CapeNat like 10 mins ago...

CapeNat, where in the garden route? Have you met the George Rep?

Ekhaatvensters: Is jy innie Kaap?

I'm not trying to scare anyone, but since this is a very popular public forum, I'm presenting the OTHER side of the debate, which ultimately is the more realistic side given the political and economic realities of the world we live in.

capetownguy : I know over time.. which is why I'm baffled by these Cape Independence people... they're trying to get something that ultimately WILL hurt the WC and SA, rather than pouring their energies into making things better for the whole country.

and where exactly do you propose our energies be spent?

The ship is sinking. Rather get off than go down with it. IMO

You may see the Cape as whatever you want.. but it is a part of the Republic of South Africa.. and is not a member of any Union....

Therefore referring to South Africa, even in an indirect way, as a Union is incorrect and legally untrue.

Yup, couldnt agree more. You pouring energy into SA is like us pouring money and energy into Zimbabwe. Or Kimberly's big hole. We want out.
