Over 30 Uber vehicles have been impounded in Cape Town for not having the proper permits to operate, according to a Bloomberg report.

I took an uber on Sunday and the driver told me that the police are stopping them and confiscating their vehicles when seeing the uber iPhones.

Why not just hide the iPhones?

I've used Uber in Cape Town for 10 days, the only thing is to avoid the surge and traffic times, if people are stupid enough to move like sheeps when everybody else moves, they will be charged accordingly.

Supply and demand, remember ?

Its called surge pricing, they were warned of the price before accepting it... so no they weren't ripped off.

Only complaint I have is that sometimes the drivers will start the trip on the app before you're even in the car.

The cost was presented to them BEFORE they even accepted the ride... therefore they are not being ripped off as they accepted the cost for a voluntary service. They could have booked a cab if they wanted.

I'm glad Uber is getting in trouble. The surge pricing is BS imo and caters for the uber rich.

So accepting it, then confirming it and complain about it is at best gross negligence and in any case sheer stupidity !

If you are not willing to pay the price to get a car quickly, then wait for a normal cab for 2 hours on NYE, like everybody.

Here we have to contend with unlicensed taxi bus's and drivers every day, just doing what they want, when they want.
Now the city is "clamping" down on new business giving the man on the street a couple of different options?
Something sounds corrupt to me.

I have seen 10x surges, I chose another service in this case.
