Cape Town Fire/Smoke Alert Thread

I agree, you need to ground team to work in conjunction with the helicopters. I was watching a Huey bombing a few weeks ago in Stellenbosch and it was just able to keep the fire from spreading, even with a dam about 30 seconds away. As soon as it had to return for refuelling the fire rapidly spread even though there were ground teams trying to control it. The helicopters also seem a lot more effective when they operate in pairs.

WTF is up with the huge fire, which looks to be close to UCT?
There wasn't enough heat to cause that!
gdiza if you're out there, be careful man!
Monstrous flames and smoke that looks to be going over towards Table Mountain and The Twelve Apostles now.

Damn!

the mountain looks burnt from my window its like molten lava sitting on top of it. It looks like the fire has moved to the other side of the mountain! I hope UCT is safe!

It seems to be moving across to Devil's Peak now.

One of our managers sent out an email from her home to all staff saying the following:

She called emergency services and they have advised that there aren’t any houses at threat at this stage, but the fire is burning very close to some residential areas – Devils Peak and it may result in evacuations. The fire started at Rhodes Memorial, it has moved around to Devils Peak and spreading fast.

So it's still looking quite bad out there :(

omg...my friend just called to tell me there is a fire...

i live in plumstead...its looking kinda bad !

My darn camera's batteries are dead, so used my Omnia.
But not getting any good pics and a bit too far off here in Century City.

Great pics there PmP.

I take it that's from the new DSLR ;)

That's a really intense fire and it's made the turn around the mountain towards Devil's Peak and other residential areas it would seem.

Thanks man. Yip it's with the new toy.

Flipping scary, wouldn't want to know what's going through some Vredehoek residents' minds. :(

Seems the wildebeest (?) and other animals that live in the reserve between Rhodes Memorial and the M3 will be safe due to the wind direction. I hope! :(

Yeah it's getting crazy by the look of things.
gdiza stays in Vredehoek man.

Eish - a colleague here at the office has family staying in University Estate and they've been evacuated.

Yeah that link from Current Affairs to IOL states that Vredehoek residents have been told to evacuate!

will probably only see it in the morning, what a waste of a 24news channel if you cant do breaking news properly

Gonna have another look from the balcony here at the office.

Don't see as much smoke as there was before it made the turn around to Devils Peak.
But that may be as a result of the smoke being blown away from my point of view.
