Cape Town - A fire was raging out of control on the slopes of Table Mountain on Wednesday morning and residents in High Cape and University Estate have had to flee their homes

The fire broke out at about 20:30 just below the Rhodes memorial and it was initially feared it might spread to the upper campus of the University of Cape Town. However, no evacuations were neede at Ikeys.

The fire was being fanned by strong winds, said fire and rescue's Deon Smit.

De Waal Drive was closed for traffic at 00:15.

Loudhailers were used to order residents of High Cape to evacuate as flames licked at the buildings.

Long queues of cars formed as residents tried to escape the inferno.

Helena Kolbe of University Estate said residents living six blocks above De Waal Drive were told to get out.

Simon Hanson and a security guard had walked door-to-door to tell the residents to leave.

A 100 firemen and 35 fire brigade vehicles were sent to the scene on Tuesday night and more were deployed in the early hours of Wednesday.

Been trying to see if I can find a sattelite image over the mountain this evening, but not having any luck.

I'm sure those flames must've been visible.
Anyone with connections at the CIA? :D

Good luck to my friends the Volunteers, as we were called out last night at 21:10. I unfortunately could not go last night, so all I can do is wish our guys and girls good luck. I sms'd gdiza last night, but I think he is at the fire.

It's not that bad anymore or I don't think so, but it was last night... wow is all I can say.

Guys, donations (food etc) take to Newlands base directly (VWS) if you want.
I've heard the guys talking about how people (friends of friends) bring food, get stopped by metro, normal police etc and well... food goes to them and their buddies so if you want to help, bring directly to Newlands (VWS) base and I promise they'll deliver to people who need it whether it be us VWS members or other units we working with. I'm going to shower, take another quick nap and go back out and do my bit.

Good luck Gdiza. Will be thinking about you tonight. Work in Ronderbosch and a group of us from the company have just dropped off some drinks and chocolates for the hardworking fighters :-)

Been smelling smouldering smoke at night for a while now and this morning the fire is back. Mountain is burning in the region of Sir Lowry's Pass....again.

Moerse fire in Cape Town City Centre at the moment

Anybody know anything?

I've just seen it now. They trying to put it out at the moment.

I don't have any info at the moment.

It's the Motomia building, it's across the way from where the MyBB's are meeting in next week.

It's a very old building (1902) and yeah, it went up in flames.
I was there with a bunch of other VWS members, we were at the Waterfront for Patriots day.

We went to help (roll hoses or whatever) but were not needed.

I see the fireman saved as many motorcycles (that Motomia had as stock)
