Cape Town 'killing cable thieves'

Why would these uneducated about electricity people think it's okay to dig up and take something that doesn't belong to them ?

Were they also not educated about stealing = really not a good thing ?

It couldn't have anything to do with example set by the governing regime which includes Herr Ehrenreich and his COSATU, could it?

Dude, copper carries electricity so they know the farking risks involved. IDIOTS.

I agree with COSATU on this one. There should be a warning given that the cables are live. That will stop the theft without having to kill anyone.

Also they must shutdown the lights at night, so that the night time cable thieves don't kill themselves either.

I take it you've heard of The Venus Project, if you haven't go read up on it. Very interesting :)

Thats exactly what im talking about.

I hope we look back one day how everybody robbed each other, only causing more work for the next guy

I have another question.....

Most of these street lights will have lightsensors that will turn the light off during the day.....

Why exactly then must the municipality go and turn the electricity off during the day if the lights turns themselves off.....
Seen quite a number in pez with daylight sensors. Nice thing is its using no power, then there is nothing wrong with keeping the power on. The power to other installations is always on, why not street lights?
As long as the cable is protected by the correctly rated breaker, and underground. Its perfectly legal, same as the cable feeding the houses.

I am no electrician, but wish to make the point that day/night sensors will only break the current that flows to the actual street lights in a given circuit, all other wires remain live irrespective and should be treated as such. How else would the sensor work if there was no power to it?
I doubt the copper thieves are stealing only the wires for street lights, everything is game, besides in most cases the cables to street lights are buried below the earth and inside the actual pole, you would need to dig open the ground or cut open the pole to get at the wires, which shows intent on behalf of the thief, so if the thief died from electrocution or got hurt he would have only himself to blame, it would not be a case of misadventure on the thief's part, nor could the Council be held liable.

@BTTB: they don't need to dig. They simply remove the cover plates (as per the pic below - next to the front wheel!) and rip the cable out between the poles.

"The Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) will be laying charges against the Democratic Alliance (DA) for “trying to kill copper thieves”.

this just shows the mind set of these people WTF are they for real are they criminals and so they want the criminal behaviour to continue . savage mentality

Do the cosatu idiots think that it doesn't cost the very same citizens millions in repairs, as well as business profits.

Little while ago thieves stole telephone cables 3 times within 2 weeks at our printing business. no internet or telephones. Scum!

If you want money, get a job. Can't find a job, create a job. Otherwise, get electrocuted.

I can see cosatu setting up safety classes for thieves next!

LOL. Wait, you want to tell me that the city must put up a sign to tell people that the lights are on??

Can't they just look up??

I feel sorry for the people that have to clean up this mess.

And with regard to warning signs: If these people do not know how dangerous electricity is, they most probably cannot read either.

I just to a fellow employee, from Dbn branch an hour ago & he told me that in his surburb, Newlands - there are several streets totally without power, including a few homes!
Guvamunt needs to act "quickly to outlaw scrap shops"!
