Cape Town WIFI mesh nets

Help!

I've created my node location on NodeDB (though I don't have a real node, just very interested! :D ), but the lat/lon seems a bit wrong - it's placed me on top of the mountain  and, really, I'm not.
I used the street maps at http://new.mweb.co.za/general/streetmap.jsp to get the co-ord.

to plot your correct lat/long do the following. sure i have typed this before but here goes again.;)

1. http://66.18.65.122/Zonelocator/ can plot your location on the sentech(they are good for something) coverage page. now hold your mouse over your location on the map. in the bottom left on the window, just above the start button in the status bar (normally shows "Done" or "errors on page"), it will have your lat/long listed write them down.

2. enter your new lat/long in the nodedb info.

use fake details and a hotmail address that you have, it does not check your id number just keep it to the same length with valid date at the beginning. note that intructions to get gps co-ords only work in ms IE not firefox

According to Sentech, my house, and the street I live in doesn't exist yet  The cluster I live in is 4yrs old.

I guess I live in the bush then

Equipment?

Daveor, what sort of equipment to you have if any?

I think you may be a little low, so you'll have to get one of them long masts.

Height is the crucial thing!

All the AP is nodedb are these commercial things. Everybody sets up these highsites to sell internet. I have internet, I just want to share files at high speed.

new ap's popping up now. anyone here?

not as yet. you know like cape town people are bit slow to the game. :D

so far testing this weekend was not as successful as hoped. had a link running from plattekloof(eben) to table view(me) but not stable, must get a bigger stronger more direct ant for link. must find some ppl to join in to make it interesting.

mufasa - keep up the good work. someone has to lead. unfortunately most people like to follow/be lazy. looking forward to seeing it.

help

Hey guys,
I would like to setup a mesh in my area, what would we need?
How much would it all cost and what distance would it cover?
we about 12 guys all within 4km from each other.

Please help.

Thanks

Which area are you in?

1. LOS (line of sight) Do you all have LOS to each other or to a central point you have access to. You might get away with poor LOS but then you might spend all that money and it does not work.

2. Common hardware, just to keep it simple. The jawug guys have had a lot of success with the linksys wrt54g routers. I have one myself and would recommend them. They are not that expensive. You might need different antenna for the different members but 4km is not that far. Stick to directional antenna, 12dbi yagi, 14dbi patch are very nice. Keep the antenna cables as short as possible. You loose signal over a long cable. Look at building or buying a POE (power over ethernet) kit, so that you can get the AP closer to the antenna so that the antenna cables stay short.

Ah thanks,

when you say line of site, you mean no big buildings in the way? no trees.. and so on?Or if i can see thier house ?
I would be the center, three of the guys houses i can basically see from my roof.
We in the Southern Subs. ( Heathfield, grassypark, bergvliet..)
There is a Saal(hall) between myslef and two fo the guys , will this make a diffrence?

thanks

blue_screen - yes a hill will make a difference.

you need clear LOS for best results. I have seen some magic before but to keep it simple have clear LOS eg. you stand where you going to put your antenna and the other person stands where they are going to put their antenna and you must be able to see each other clearly.

less of a distance less of a problem with LOS.
and i say again. for best results you must be able to see the antenna you pointing at.
Hope you get the idea.

and i would agree with Mufasa..
/me goes to look how you do this rate the post thing.

i am in the same area, you may see my node from time to time adroa.
do you get internet in those towers ?

I want to be a sniffer!

Musan listen quick! I'm using one of those poe setups, the only problem is that net stumbler and so forth don't work. I think they are meant for like a laptop pcmicia sort of setup. Or that whole centrino wireless thing.

Do you guys know of any way to scan for ssid hidden and not hidden and discover networks with a poe setup (poe as in power of ethernet)

The whole idea is not to hack the planet, only to find people for a mesh.

because these folks don't read this forum and i don't want to advertise in papers about a mesh because it attracts that unwanted type of attention if you get my drift.

Do you perhaps know the make of the equipment that are attached to your poe setup and if you can access your poe setup from your pc?
