Well the antenna design I'm looking into produces about 18 Db is circular with a diameter of 30 odd centimeter. Given that we're doing a point to point link with one of these antennas on both ends gives a combined signal strength of 30+ Db, should be good for up to 11km. When I said a cost of R1000, that would be for both sides of the link, so R500 per person. If you had an access point with an omni others could connect to that for around R500. Although I may be trying this with 802.11g if I can find reasonably priced equipment that is also FreeBSD friendly for other reasons.

If someone can organise hosting I'll actually document (with photo's) the whole assembly and installation

Hi, we are building a network of Wi-fi hotspots on lower campus UCT using Skyrove. If anyone is keen to join the movement of unwiring lower campus please let me know...

Hi Guys

I am living quite high up on the mountain next to Kirstenbosch Gardens and am keen to link up with anyone in the area. If I stand on my roof, I have LOS for miles.

Ideally I want to link up with a mate in Constantia but I need to somehow bounce my signal off someone in Plumbstead to get round the mountain. I would also like to link up with people near the Rondebosch Common/UCT area.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Please don't shoot me down, I am a wifi n00b unfortunately. I have just purchased a adsl router with access point built in. I would like to join up with a wifi mesh. I live in goodwood, near N1 City. I have not yet purchased an outdoor antennae, I would appreciate if someone could provide me with some advice or a link to a site explaining the whole process. Brackenfell on the bandwagon yet?

Moving back to SA (Brackenfell) and was curious about wifi-ing around Brackenfell. Does SA have hotspots like Starbucks yet? Or are these just ordinary folks connecting like a giant wirefree lan party? Can one join in with just a wifi laptop or do you need NASA grade equiptment?

I still don't see anything in the UCT/Rosebank area. So many students here but no one seems interested. Unless I'm in the dark or am not picking up anyone's signals.

I can't believe that with so many students in the area, rondebosch/newlands/rosebank/obs is still not covered. MIT's roofnet seems like such a good idea. It would be great to have a similar system running here. i'm keen to get involved, unfortunately, the trees limit my LOS connectivity. we need a high site - like UCT upper campus!

If such a system is legal (and from what I can tell under the new legislation, if it's used for non-profit purposes, then it is) then I see no reason why UCT shouldn't allow a repeater to be set up on one of the taller building's roofs. Such a repeater could cover a huge portion of the city.

I'm not sure how we'd propose the whole idea. Our SRC hasn't been cast in the best light lately so i'm not sure that's the correct route. ...and it would prob'ly take an age to approve!
