It is true that there is an access point on top of Tugwell... What's it called?

Actually there are lots on UCT's campus. I contacted one of their ICTS guys and he said that they actually rent out space to other companies to install highsites on the buildings on campus. Their are lots of antennas on the Tugwell and Marquard roofs as well as on the PD Hahn building.

I already asked about being able to connect to UCT's wireless from off campus as I live just across the road from Tugwell but he didn't respond. Where abouts are you Lunchbox? PM me. Got about 3 or 4 people interested within about 150m of me.

EDIT: I just had a brilliant idea. I've got a couple of friends in Tugwell (1oth or 11th floor). I could get them to put a repeater or ap in their room at the window (which faces Main Road and everything else from there). PM me with email addie if you interested. Will reply asap.

UCT Area and Tugwell Wireless

Clearly there are quite a few people in and around the UCT and Tugwell/Rosebank/Newlands area who are keen to connect. I will chat to Mantis about putting a plan together to set something up on Tugwell. In the meantime, if there is anyone else in the immediate area with LOS to Tugwell and who is keen to link up let us know. Mufasa, I know you frequent this form, it not possible to link up to CTWUG from the top of Tugwell. Where is the nearest node? Come guys, lets get this thing going!!!

How do i join irc://irc.jawug.za.net #ctwug??

Do i need to connect to a specific server or what?

Shot squirell! took me a while 2 join but i got there in the end!

mufasa,

Were is the highsite in milnerton?

Clarification please

Im in Paarl, heard about "meshing" , frankly speaking i have no clue what are

features and benefits, i have the dsl384 package , so pay to Telkom and to my ISP , i have a satelitte dish (commercial tv) and started recently to realise
that there are tons of things like FTP and that is all chinese to me.

When pc's are connected what are the practical consequences, advantages ?

Do is still pay both Telkom and my ISP ?

What bothers me is "commercial / non commercial" as the way i see it is i want broadband for hdtv / wireless, video on demand / phone and that would mean i need more than 3 gig per month , and radio in surround quality
i heard the other day, quite nice.

As you see, lots of questions , any place where i can get the full story ?

Thanks,

Peter

Hey Mailman. I'm in Paarl about 20 - 30% of the time. Where about are you?

Okay, finally finished my move to the new house. Managed to get my PC setup again yesterday evening. Now... how do I go about connecting to the mesh, I'm in the Ottery area?

Please help, as I am very keen to try this out.

Do u have any wireless equipment yet?

u will need a wireless bridge that's capable of running power over ethernet cause it needs to be mounted on top of ur roof with an external antenna - mikrotik router or wrt with a 13dbi patch antenna or yagi should do fine considering u have line of sight to on of our highsites like plattekloof hills, blaauberg, tamboerskloof ect.

If someone can organise hosting I'll actually document (with photo's) the whole assembly and installation[/QUOTE]

site see.za.net available....

ok heres my situation. I can connect to the net through someones elses wireless ap (with his permission of course), and dial up using pppoe to the internet. My connection to him usually says "limited connection" but sometimes says connected but I have to use pppoe to access the net. the signal is really low (sometimes says "no signal").

I wanted to buy a WRT54G (R350 on CTWUG) but wanted to know whether or not I'd be able to use it to connect to the net (doesn't matter if only via pppoe). All I want is better reception, not being cut off all the time, and faster file sharing between us (and anyone else who wants to). Any help would be much appreciated. (please note: I'm not a n00b, but I'm not that clued up either)

hope i understand u correct:

it seems u would like to know if it is possible to buy an wrt and then connect to the internet through it using pppoe - if so, the wrt is not modem and u still need an internet source or from an dsl modem or from wireless device that's connected to the internet

no, the wrt will connect to another ap which has internet.

then the wrt will def help boost ur signal and there is firmware u can use to do ur pppoe
