Cape Town WIFI mesh nets

Hooray, CTWUG-BOT is up. Situated on botlarey hill to connect the northern suburbs.

Hey,

I am looking to join or start a wireless mesh within the Capri Village, Noordhoek, Sun Valley area as I have a few friends that are in LOS and would just like to lan. Also another bonus is that I am positioned in Capri Village next to Black Hill and look down onto the surrounding areas. I would still need to purchase equipment but work at a computer shop so that will be easy.

Noticed these instructions on how to build a directional antenna with 22db of gain using a satellite dish.

Anyone know how effective a Dstv dish might be with that setup or a wireless usb dongle withing the can?

thx

Soon to be in the bergvliet area and would really like to connect to the CTWUG. Also have some keen contributors in Lakeside, Kirstenhof, Observatory and also possibly Newlands.

Any Ideas?

Hey I'm in Bergvliet... also moved from Plumstead :)

I haven't found anything close enough to here though..

I was using a dstv dish (for +- 2 Years) with a homebrew 5.8 feed which gave me 45mbps over a 8km link but the link has been replaced with a sector.
The alignment was a bitch though, it had a hectic small beamwidth.

Haven't been action here in ages. Thought id just let people know that the wug is growing nicely, adding new users almost very week now.

Okay, so i wanna know who would be interested in a highsite in the brackenfell area? Please specify your area so i can get numbers. I know there is already the botlary higsite but i wanna setup something closer.

I am in Morgenster area and need a Internet connection there. I have a Laptop and a Linksys WRT54 Wireless Router. What else do I need?

Hi. I am from the Karoo, and here as everyone knows are nothing, so the only way we can link is wireless, have allot of experience in long range (line of sight) of 30km, and 9km with ease. have done allot of these, will be glad to assist if needed, also uses miro's equipment, the acconet unit (build in router) can cover about 8km easy.
Other interference also plays a role (like other wireless)

LinkIT, thanks for the offer but we have a few links running already, some of our clients connect from ranges of 9 - 15km away from highsite.

Info on connecting to CTWUG

Hi all.

I just want to double check if i can connect to the CTWUG in the southfield area. Will be getting tidy payout from a vehicle accident i was in and will therefore have the resources to finally connect. I know of a WUG in the Grassy Park area but is this connected to ctwug?

Also what equiptment will i need ( down to the last bolt as im not very clued up on this type of technology ) and is there a "how to" on setting it up.

Lastly what services are hosted on the wug in terms of files, gaming etc etc ( i know it all depends on who's willing to share but a rough outline of what i can expect would be nice since im sure the equiptment doesnt come cheap. )

If one wants to share files, would they have to set up an ftp servers because i have close to 500GB of movies, music, videos which im willing to open up.

Thanks,

Hey Acidrain

Yes we have a wug in Grassy Park. Friend moving to Southfield and we looking to connect him at the end of the month. Maybe you could help us. No we not yet connected to CTWUG. WIFI very time consuming, and wife not happy with this. Happy to show u what we got and share.

Our wug has no restrictions, you come up with the service we happy to try it. Services we have so far are FTP, Teamspeak, gaming.

Most excellent :D. Just out of curiosity, how many people do you have connected. I also still need the run down of what i need ( all i know is router, but which one is recommended, and antenna ). Dunno much of anything else after that.

SSID query.

Did a quick test on my roof and picked up the following SSID's. Does anyone know who they belong to. They are:

1. ms-23
2. GO5BB

Spoke to some people on the IRC chat, will be using 5Ghz antennae to try connect to CTWUG, apparently i will be able to and then will broadcast their signal. :D

Yea we also supply @ distributor prices, so we can probably get kit cheaper than buying from their sites.
