Cape Town WIFI mesh nets

Hi all,

New to the forums, new to the idea... I'm dead keen though... I've just moved into new place in the Burgundy Estate development (cnr Plattekloof and Tygerberg Valley rds).

I'm also happy to offer hosting to the cause, I've got an account with a US based hosting plan.

What are the security issues involved in joining the mesh? Presumably the mesh acts as one big 'local' subnet.

If it's one big local subnet, then the mesh doesn't provide 'internet access' in the traditional sense, and we are left to our own devices as far as that is concerned, or is there a plan for having 'gateway nodes'?

I'm sure I'll have more questions after these are answered :)

As far as CTWUG goes ( and im assuming this is the mesh you want to join ) there is no and most probably never will be internet provision on the network. It mainly used for file sharing and gaming along with other services like teamspeak etc etc.

You can however create your own mesh and share internet over it but this will most likely be frowned upon by many.
 
Hey Sirlark, CTWUG is one big subnet devided into smaller subnets for each usernode. As far as internet go, no we dont provide internet and dont think we will ever. You are free to come speak to us in irc if you have any more questions. and have a look at www.ctwug.co.za
 
I am busy building my pc, and when it is finished, it will have wi-fi.

Are there any connection points in Grassy Park in the Southern Suburbs?
I would gladly join once I could get the correct equipment, I'm quite interested in the technology.

Hi Asha'man X, Im currently on a mesh that covers your area. Infact the HS is in Pelikan Heights by Muizenberg. We always looking for new people to join. Ill speak to him and see if you he cant meet you on IRC when you get your pc working.

Please feel free to do a scan around and see if you pick up anything with loem in it. We a open wug for all to join. There is a lots of 2.4Ghz coverage in grassy park area so i suggest start with a wifi pci card with a 6 meter lmr195 cable and antenna and scan, or go heavy and get a 2.4Ghz cpe

I hate an Omni, what a waste.

New to WiFi??? :confused: You imba to wifi

Ne ways, wrt happy... im not 100% of all the HS he is running but the one im on is a 5Ghz Sector, not sure of its Db rating ( SSID: loem.za.org )

Firstly, I think you guys are great. I want to connect to a wireless mesh (ctwug), but i cannot find a good enough step by step guide to build my own node, ctwug, has supplied a how to, but dont take me wrong, its not that good. I want to post my own how to, but I first want to find out how you guys done it, I waould like to chat to the guys on IRC, but im unable to.

Do anyone have inform, it would go along way

hi Chez,

the best for you would be to try and talk to us on irc there is a few web-based clients like duke and wug. You can maybe start by plotting yourself on http://www.ctwug.za.net/wugplotter.

If you really can't get onto irc try our forum we generally know as soon as a post is made and will respond fairly quickly.
