Looking to open a Capitec account for online banking in late Dec early Jan.

Anything I need to know about Capitec? I just want to buy stuff from Takealot :)

You need to know that:
You are making the right move.
Take your RI/FICA documents with you eg. recent proof of address.
You can earn some nice interest on your money.
Getting a loan from capitec is not a good idea.
Rather put some of your $$$ into a capitec ~6 month fixed deposit once you reach a R9999+ balance.
Get a Virgin Money credit card to complement your capitec card.
Make sure they activate your MasterCard for online purchase before you leave the branch.
Make sure (yes, again) they activate your MasterCard for online purchase before you leave the branch.
To use internet banking you need a security dongle.
You can decide to get an actual dongle or an app for your phone.
The physical dongle might cost you ~R50.
If you must rather withdraw $$$ at your local PnP or such - this way it only costs you R1!
...Swipes are free.

What are RI/FICA documents? Will my card be chip or swipe? Does it matter?

This Dongle is reliable?

Thank you :)

RICA/FICA documentation would entail any less than 3 months old electricity/utilities/water statement showing your home address and your green SA ID book.
Your card will be a chip+pin card with a magnetic stripe at the back as a backup. No it does not matter.
The dingle is as reliable as the phone application. Just as long as you do no lose either one of these.

I am really content with Capitec I must say. Only thing they are missing is a credit card. If they can give me the same deal as Virgin then I will move that to them also. I would prefer to have my credit card with the same bank (and the fact that Virgin uses ABSA....bleh!!!)

I prefer putting money at my house. My house is my bank. No withdrawal and admin fees

I've been thinking about opening a Capitec account just to save some cash as a rainy day fund.

Will be paying them a visit once I get my ID from home affairs sorted.

Capitec rocks and you can find branches open on a Sunday.

Just this Sunday past I upgrade my card to the new chip one, took me 12 minutes from the time I walked in till the moment I walked out and the branch was rather busy.

I do want to mention that I could not use my card today to buy from Takealot (whats new) but instead I've opted for COD orders - done that for my last 3 orders.

But my wife has had no problems buying from Amazon with her Capitec card.

To earn the nice interest they give you, must it be a savings account or a regular cheque account?

Highly recommended. Saved at least R 2000 in bank fees in one year. The only thing they don't do is foreign exchange, although you can use your debit card for overseas purchases. They only do savings accounts

Go into your nearest branch - for R35 they will upgrade your Debit Card to their new Online Debit Card. It's not a credit card because you're not working on credit, but it is a debit MasterCard that allows you to shop online.

To OP:

I closed my ABSA savings account and moved to Capitec. I am extremely happy with them.

R4.50 account fee is easily covered by the delicious 5% interest you earn (on balances up to R9999).
You can have several (4 I think) sub-accounts that all earn you interest at 5% up to R9999. So you could have 5 accounts each with R9999 in them if you wanted. You only pay one R4.50 fee regardless of how many accounts you have.

Draw from any Pep, PnP, Boxer or Checkers shop for only R1.
Swiping is free. Online banking is free. There are 2 apps that you can use for Internet Banking Tokens depending on what type of phone you have. I use the BB Online confirmation & token generation app and it works great. I used to have a dongle and I traded it in for this instead. Dongles are currently free, as I understand.

All of this info is on their website, including a comprehensive breakdown of all the fees for all the different things. They are very upfront about what you pay.

Everybody should have a Capitec account.

.

I am aware and have the MasterCard Debit Card already. I want a credit card for those "OMG what am I gonna do now?" moments where you need access to funds for a emergency.

Ideally you should plan to have money saved for those OMG moments. Going on credit in emergencies is where the trouble starts for most people.
