Caps will increase ten-fold, says Goldstuck

Bridge for sale. Only one previous owner, a little old lady that only walked across it on Sundays.
 
That's close to the "80%" drop in costs predicted elsewhere. I for one am optimistic.
 
even if telkom gave away their gigs for free they would still be making tons of mony with double line rental charges
 
10 times the cap sounds nice but this is not the only factor entering into the usability equation. Unless speeds improve a greater cap means just more (wasted) time. Fine if one plays a game but not good if it is for business purposes.
The next thing to consider are the postbox sizes and permitted size of e-mail attachments with many companies. What is the point of having 10Gb cap, a 4Mb line, which should allow one to send an e-mail reasonably quick when one has to split it up first into 6 different e-mails because the recipients e-mail rejects an attachment of 4 3Mb PDF plus 2 800kb files?

Nothing should be looked at only in isolation.
 
I for one really hope this actually happens. But lets hope that they don't do the same as other operators by telling us OH its going to be so cheap and when they start its actually the same price and then we back to square one. Come on people start praying!!!!!

And the big guys like Vodacom and MTN are going to claim that international bandwidth is only one portion of their costs and that they have to recoup the money they spent on their new local fibre networks, support etc. So I reckon the prices won't drop by that much. As much as it hurts me I have to admit that they do have other costs. So I don't think that caps with increase ten fold just because one of the ISPs costs are decreasing by that amount. That said I am hoping that caps will increase by a significant amount!
 
The way I look at it, the problem atm is the local costs. Local bandwidth has sod all to do with undersea cables. The fact that we pay as much as we do for something that doesnt leave our borders is just plain silly. Why didnt telkom use some of their Billions to improve local circuits to the point where local is almost free, then a LOT of people wouldnt have minded so much that international was expensive. Would mean the local net would be thriving and I guarantee you they would make more money than they currently do.
 
This i would love to see, but being lied so often i find it very difficult.

So can we expect this increase in bandwidth allowance to occur every ten years? :rolleyes:

Goldstuck further predicted that Telkom would double its ADSL usage allowances between March 2009 and June 2009 in anticipation of changes which would be brought about by Seacom.

Seeing Telkom already softcap and allow users to almost get there right now what would the difference be. Double the bandwidth then hardcap once you hit 6 GB? No difference to present scenario

This really gets me... I run an email cap of 15mb and police incoming and hard cap outgoing email to 512kb/s, it doesn't affect normal internet access and users don't need to use things like yousendit.

I'd rather manage smtp as smtp than deal with users using http for that purpose.

but, wouldn't you guess, hardly anyone else has threshholds the same size as mine!

That's all? a tenfold increase is nothing. We had 30 GB caps in 2005 remember?

I think a 50 or hundredfold increase would be more reasonable given how much bandwidth will be available with Seacom. If Comcast and other US ISPs have caps of 250 GB, why can't we have the same?

ROFL :D It is funny how we forget that we use to have 30GB caps isn't it..? I have actually forgotten how far backwards telecommunications in SA have gone:(
