In case you thought Pommy knew nothing about cricket....

From an article on cricinfo, Okay, Bradman is at No.1... but who is last?

ROFL :D

He spent a year in England - when at school.

If you pick up an accent in 1 year you are an idiot. I spend 11 months in the UK and I sure as hell did not come back with a bunch of apples and pears....

What are you saying? One of the hazards of playing int'l cricket is facing int'l-quality bowlers, of which not all the names on that list qualify. :)

Wasim clearly had his number.

Yes because straight and full is rocket science :p

At least it's not Peter Bacela. ;)

+1 :sick::sick:

Not sure what the issue with his accent is though. He certainly doesn't have a british accent. Would those of you digging at his accent prefer that he talk with a thick Shona/Ndebele accent? I suspect Pommie was schooled primarily in English and his accent hasn't changed much. But lets face it - Alan Donald could barely speak a word of English back in the early 90s and is now commentating without the thick Afrikaans accent - I have no issue with a change of accent if it means becoming more understandable or even more neutral, however I doubt this was the case with Pommie. Many Zimbabweans speak fluent English with far less of an accent than most South Africans, especially those with good educations behind them...

Most ;) They speak better english in 99% of the cases than south african.

Also I just don't like pommie's commentating and his accent is a bit droll, just like his comments....

I mean sure he is obvious but heh, that is kinda the commentators job to comment on what has been done.

He's like the Hugh Bladen of cricket, except without the drunken entertainment value that Hugh brings to the microphone table. Pommie's life's ambition appears to be to take the Captain Obvious award away from Hugh. They're competing very well lately...:D

Chis what does his poor batting have to do with anything?

Chis what is your batting average in cricket? What bowlers have you faced?

I hate this fake accent and I hate the crap he talks about during commentating.

I miss Trevor Quirk and Robin Jackman together.
They managed to talk a lot of crap. :)

I personally enjoy Pommie. He is very personable in interviews, and though I do agree that he is pretty obvious at times I think he does a great job for those watching that may not have extensive cricket watching experience. My three year old however has picked up on the damn “DLF Maximum” nonsense and shouts it even if a single, dot ball, no ball, wide, leg-bye, wicket, run-out or four occurs.….this is very sucky.

Hugh bladen gives me a ****ing headacke, but guess what when I listen to the Afrikaans version its bloody ****ing John van rensburg who is even 10 times more obvious. I hate SA's Rugby commentators.

I'm not getting paid to provide an expert opinion. But like I said in my previous comment, I just find it amusing that our most prominent commentator has the distinction, according to cricinfo, of being the worst ever test batsman.

Jeez: the chargers were inches away from being 5/4.

Edit: and again!

Yea but he was not a batsmen so why do you find that funny? Many tail enders are fighting him for that position i am sure. He knows alot if you ask me far more than any of us arm chair okes. I love how excited he gets haha tonight he went off with those 2 dropped catches and even the indian oke was trying to get as excited.

killa, I hate to ruin the joke by spelling it out... other tailenders might be fighting him for that position, but Pommy is head and shoulders below any other Test player ever in the 120+ years that cricket has been played. Ever.

I realise that none of us have played at that level, but then we don't get paid to talk to a camera about cricket every night.

Pommy could be the best commentator in the world and I would still think it was funny that he had the worst test batting record ever.

at least he got to play international cricket. Mark Nicholas was captain of West Manchester for 10 years and did not once get a chance to play cricket for England, he knows a lot about the game though.

Pommie does irritate me sometimes too, especially his interviews.

But I don't see what his international test batting average has anything to do with it. His average is 2.00 and Chris Martin's is 2.17 (I wouldn't say head and shoulders below (sic) than any other). Some of the best commentators haven't even played test cricket yet know a lot about the game.

He added a bit when he first came on the scene, but is a bit obvious - but then he's probably meant to appeal to other sectors of the population.

Some of the other ex-players are quite boring, but offer very valuable and insightful info (from experience) at times.

Allan Donald has quite an english accent too.

Robin Jackman as the roving reporter has been very good and beats the hell out of those women we had for local Pro20s a few seasons ago. Couldn't bear to watch them.

They get told to mention the sponsors all the time and make up terms like DLF maximum, etc.

But I'm so glad the IPL came here and we're putting on a great show (with 3 weeks notice). Lets be grateful for that. :)

Like i said i do not know what a bowler's test average has to do with him being one of the best ipl commentators if you ask me, he has so much energy and seems to put everything into it, there are so many dead boring okes who talk kuk all the time so i am not sure why pommie is getting stick. Most of them say the obvious as well.

Chis as people have mentioned some okes have never played cricket, that is the point chis you don't get paid nor have you ever played international cricket, so while he may have a bad batting average when was the last time you were bowled by wasim? O wait you watch him on tv as opposed to him running in at you in an international game. Just the fact he has played international is amazing regardless of how poor he was. What i find funny is you laughing about the fact he has played against the likes of wasim, i mean what have you done that is anything close to that in your life?

Because he gets so fscking excited about talking absolute drivel. Comes across as fake - he's one of those who tries too hard, and in the process pisses more people off than he entertains by the looks of things...
