The regulator itself is R420, I was getting to the bearings when the phone went dead.

I buy most things as I need them. The cheap way is start with a basic set of spanners and sockets from midas, autozone or game. You could probably get enough tools to fix your car for under R1000.

I work on my car myself. I do it all from Oil to Cambelt change. No way I will work on an alternator.

Nothing special or difficult about it. It's an straight foward electric motor basically. It comes appart in two or three pieces and you just put it together the same way.
It's usually the bearing or regulator, that's worn out and you just replace that to recon it.

Taking it out and putting it back I have no issue. I don't open up alternators as I have no farking clue about them. There is a reason Auto Electricians do it and not mechanics ;)

What is the actual issue, is the alternator whining, is the voltage output too low. Don't replace or repair until you know what's wrong?

King Tony makes good stuff, you could also look at the Gedore sets which are similar in price and quality and more widely available.

I think the voltage output is too low cause a battery centre tested it and said the voltage on the alternator is too low.
 
I think I should tell you, at this point my battery is completely dead.

I was driving to work this morning and my battery died all the lights went off.
The hooter came on and stayed on, everyone on the road was staring at me. Fortunately it happened about 1 km from my office.

Drove into office park with hooter permanently on. Switched of engine and it still stayed on. Took me 10 minutes to find a spanner and disconnect the battery then the hooter stopped.

Car is going nowhere.

Had a look online (US as well as they can be anal about tools) and they seem to be ok. They're no snapon, staklwille, gedore etc but they will do the job just fine ;)

My gedore tools came in a solid metal box.

You need to get a battery charger and multimeter. Midas sells both, they have a very good charger for around R800 Psa 8amp I think it's called, always handy to have one.

You want metal it lasts forever, just don't slide it along the floor, or put a piece of cardboard or carpet under it.

Unless he plans to also recon his battery himself he doesn't need a charger.
And multimeter can be handy, but is also not necessary.
