car modification and pimping

Okay.

GTIs are tuned commonly. Seeing that the one in question is a 6 which means its at least 10 years old, do preventative maintenance BEFORE any mods (this includes DSG service if its a non-manual). And don't cheap out too on the preventative maintenance. I've seen crap quality mods to elite setups, so your budget would determine the modding route you should go for.

520d is probably the B47 or N47. Both super reliable engines. Again, preventative maintenance is key here. As far as I know there are additional complexities with tuning diesels which others can speak to.

To your question on costs, no doubt the Golf would cost less to maintain. But as a lover of the 320d Fanboys Thread, I can tell you that diesel power is excellent.

What are you leaning towards?
Man i personally drove a friend's 525 bro.... that thing when u stepped on the gas was insane man.... So was mainly leaning towards BMWs....it made me feel alive man lol. I wouldnt mind a golf as well. Benn in one and it drove amazing but the BMW was something else.

Ah okay. Look for an E90 330d and call it a day.

You know, there’s a reason insurance premiums are high for young guys buying sports cars. This thread is that reason.

My advice is don’t do it. If you let power control you, you’ll die at best, or at worst paralyse yourself or a family in the other car.

Think about the responsibility of that and if you want to live with it. I get the attraction of a powerful car, don’t get me wrong … I have one now. I just think maybe you need a bit more maturity before you make a big mistake.

As a young guy, buying a safe boring car that keeps you alive isn’t a bad idea.

so best bet would be to go with 330d ?
Just looking at this particualr car:

- I see a red triangle warning on the instrument cluster. Could be break pads, could be cooling system. Red flag.
- I see some weird lights on the front bumper between the headlights and foglights. What is that?
- Maybe I'm drunk - but what is that blue dot on the Drive screen? It appears on another picture also.
- I won't speak about trim issues I'm seeing, considering its an F10 pre-LCI (facelift) meaning its not a new car.

Ask for more pic or go take it for a spin.

I totally understand bro. I totally do. I used to own a chevrolet cruze ls .... it was a nice car to drive and all but i felt it wasnt fast enough. even mods were limited. So sold it to get something .....Of course not going to be driving full tilt and max speed all the time. I just want something exciting to drive especially in the freeways and stuff.

Oh Yes I see now. Those are definitely red flags.

Hah, freeways are the worst places to speed. You understand that the NCAP safety tests are done at 60km/hour right? If you crash into a pillar at 120km/h, you're gonna need airbags and Jesus. If you AREN'T being one of those irresponsible maniacs swerving between lanes through rush-hour traffic, the best you can do is enjoy speeding up from 100km/hour to 140km/hour, and then slowing down, and then speeding up again, and ... nah man.

I think the best fun in a reasonably fast car is the 0-60km/h dash from a traffic light: just watch out for pedestrians. And potholes. And traffic cameras. And cars not stopping from side-streets. And... yeah I dunno hey. Just be safe. Maybe get a step-up car from a Chevrolet Cruze to anything with a turbocharger. Even a 1.4T Audi or BMW 118i will feel great. Even an Opel Astra, I used to love those when I was younger! Anything but being a try-hard in a GTI.

Thanks man. So a BMW 520d woud b overkill? of course in free ways at some point i would have to slow down. Bt man the adenaline rush when u press the gas on tuned car man ..... hehhe. audi maintanance is something else. Maybe a bmw 118i but i do not know how that one drives.

Get the Golf GTi. I would like to believe there are a lot more people with tuned Golfs than 520d’s. Therefore, there will be a lot more information on how to tune a golf and you will have more tuners to choose from.

Lastly, it will be much easier to sell a tuned golf than a tuned 520d. Not many people buy 520d’s to race them.

Real lastly now, none of these cars is cheap to maintain so get that out of your system. You will pay unless you are handy with the spanner.

Last last now, your fuel bill will probably triple.

The best advise is from those that say don’t do it. Cars need throw away money else you will be catching a taxi while your car is on bricks at some bush mechanic.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but BMW's aren't cheap to maintain either. If something big breaks it is going to cost you a kidney and your first born.

Get a 2013+ BMW 135i.

Best choice is to not do any of this. Get a nice sensible car for now.

A project car shouldn’t be your only car.
