Car purchase...

thats not really a spanner...

Thats just your personal opinion and it doesn't really have any bearing on the real world. People need cars...

And let's not forget, if you look after your car, you won't spend AS much on it to service.

If you don't look after it etc - you pay your ass off to look after it.

trying to rely on public transport in South Africa is not an option. I'm thinking of another country..

Wear and tear will effect u sooner or later, no matter how "looked after" a car is.

My girlfriend gets around in Europe - so it can work, yes.

Not really, if you service your vehicle, change tyres when you supposed too, it won't be a huge price because you'll be paying to fix your car over time.

Yeah, people need cars because getting around in Cape Town is a joke. U can't risk taking taxi's or trains without worrying about getting mugged.

I've been driving around the city all day everyday for 2 years, i'm just saying i'm sick of it. i need a new job :P

Well, in my new job (with my spiffy company car) (holds thumbs) I'll be doing what you were doing sh0t :)

Oh yes!

I'm leaving my current job (hopefully) soon!
In my new job, I'll be getting a company car which will I can also use for private use - the only catch "I MUST NOT ABUSE IT"

I'll be working with a good friend (going back into IT)

So, no need to worry about buying my own car anymore :)

Just need to go see him, finalize the 'finer' details and then bam, resign and start a new job!

Can't wait though!

Depends how much the car is driven too bro.. You know how much i drive around. One repair was over R6000, worn brakes, tires, steering rack.. Things tend to chaos. Cars break down, accidents happen, i'm just saying.

... I also know how you looked after your car! case closed - you're not a very good example of how to look after a car.

After 3 years of doing what i'm doing, u know what i've realised? I don't wanna do it anymore. I need something bigger, more meaningful, more useful. I don't feel like i'm helping anyone anymore. I'm just making my boss more money, while i use my own car and he laughs when we fork out thousands for repairs.

Dude, empty packets and cans by the front seat won't damage a car.. neither will dirt on the outside of the car..

My boss will be different :)

wow.... a personal rant about cars...

And no, packets and bottles inside a car won't affect a car, but they show a general lack of respect for the vehicle which 99/100 times indicates how a person treats and looks after their vehicle mechanically.

I used to do in excess of 1000kms a week, and I had to pay for normal services and brakes and tires, because I looked after my vehicle...

You're so close to the truth, sh0t might get upset :)

But as they say hey - each to their own!

I want to get insurance, but who to go for who won't rob me blind!

I mean, I want to get a decent car first car so I can't spend R800 on insurance, I simply can't afford that... R500 MAX is what I'm looking at.

Try Pleroma Brokers in Tableview.
Came in cheaper than any of the direct solutions we're flooded with nowadays.
Though if you're looking at driving around in your new company car, you may not need insurance anymore.
But can't hurt to keep their number, for when you get your own ;)

Hi peeps.

Need some advice as Im not very mechanically inclined (needless to say, ive been hit over the head quite a few times where mechanics is concerned):

Driving along vanguard drive, in my Golf 4 1600 comfortline. The gear lever, suddenly becomes all wobbly..

Then I realize I cant get any other gears, besides what i think is 3rd and 4th. No reverse, no second and not even 5th.

Can any body shed some light on what the issue might be, and what sort of cost it would incure.

There is a small plastic linkage connecting the actuating rod from the gear lever and the selector shaft. I guess it's either broken or dislodged from the ball joint.
If you look behind the gearbox while someone is moving the gear-lever backwards and forwards (sideways too), you might find the linkage which is dislodged and prevents the selector turning sideways to select other gears than straight-in-line ones.(1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4rth, 5th and reverse)
Can be fixed with a wire and pliers as interim solution to get you home.
That link is not too expensive though.:)
Old Golf problem. :(
