Car regrets

2005 BMW 318ti. Husband of a lady who worked for me lost his job and was selling the car for a bargain price in 2007 - R85k. It was worth R130k retail and R105k trade

Nice car. It was on a motorplan with Auric Auto in Claremont. Dreadful workshop. It went in for 30 000km service, came back with an oil leak, a tyre with a flat spot where they had locked the brakes (why?) and a broken seat recliner handle. They tried 4 times to fix the oil leak and wanted to charge me R11k. In the end I had a mechanic friend to look at it. The AA workshop had mislaid the sump nut washer and over-tightened the nut, damaging the thread. Such a simple fix confirmed their shoddy service

About 6 months later a front brake pad split in half, so back it went. There was a ramp in this workshop from the first floor. AA’s workshop assistant managed to drive the car off the ramp. It fell 2m onto 2 customers cars and was written off

The ins co paid me R118k. Auric Auto hid behind their “not responsible” clause. A grudging apology
Very few reputable workshops out there it seems. I've heard too many anecdotes from my sister's husband who runs his own of how these dealerships are ****ing clueless and struggle to do proper diagnostics, you pay an arm and a leg at an official dealership like auric and they probably send their problem cars to an independent workshop with an experienced auto electrician/mechanic.

Got one of those Renault Megane 1.6 with the fat arse and flat rear window brand new in matric when they were released. It was the beesknees at the time. Never again.

Ordered a Mustang GT when they were released in SA, got the first one in town. I found out on the weekend before collecting that I am gonna be a dad. So I had it for a weekend and sold it. Did some line lock burnouts. Was meh.

Had an F30 320d M-Sport in Estoril Blue. Brilliant car. The ex, baby mama didn't want it so I traded it in for an S3 for her. Kak move. Best cars ever.

Ordered a new Hilux GD6 when they were released while deep down inside I knew I should have gotten an Amarok V6. Drove it for a little while and traded it for a V6.

Flipping hell. That 320d should not have gone anywhere.

First Car - Conquest 180i Sport. Was a hand me down from my dad and i paid my boet out half its value. No regrets. loved it. kept it to 300 000kms

Second Car - Yaris 1.3 Spirit with all the bells and whistles. Dated someone quite far away, wanted something frugal and comfy. Sold it after 3 yrs as it was sooooo slow and boring. I wouldnt say i regretted it, did its purpose, got a fantastic trade for it.

Third Car - Fiesta ST (2.0L NA) Had alot of fun, joined a car club that was very active. It did have major issues (engine and gearbox) fixed under warranty. If i didnt have a warranty, would have been my biggest regret. otherwise great little car

4th Car - Polo Gti Twincharged 1.4 TSi - Didnt mind it. loved the DSG, build quality and very quick. Had a few issues, all warranty. It was in retrospect a very boring car dynamically, rarely drove in manual mode. kept it for 5 yrs and got a fantastic trade in. so no regrets.

Current Car - Renault Clio RS Trophy - Favourite car ever. Quick, fun, agile. I knock it into sport mode as soon as the oil temps hit 80 degrees. I dont even concern myself with fuel consumption. Did a few trackdays, I randomly go for peninusular drives for no particular reason. just over 5 yrs and I want to keep it, project car while getting another daily some day

Brand new Renault Sandero in 2011 or so … absolute piece of rubbish that has scared me off ever buying a Renault. Proudly made in South Africa, and it showed. It had doors as light as tin cans (zero confidence about protection in a crash), manual wind-up windows, and when I started finding staples on the floor coming out from where they stapled the carpet to the floor, I was done. Sold it in six months (at a massive loss) for a new Citroen C3 (really amazing build quality by comparison). C3 didn’t have a turbo though, so it really suffered up in Johannesburg.

1. Citi golf 1.4. Great starter car.

What model year was your Focus ST? Any reliability issues?

It was a 2015. Didnt have a single issue. Really great car. Until i noticed the rubber door seals starting to go. Traded it 2 weeks later. In retrospect i should have kept it. But having dual clutch auto is a game changer. The focus ST never came out in auto in SA

You complaining about rubber seals  .Try keeping a car for + 20 years , that will be the least of your problems
