Online gambling illegal in South Africa yet African palace and all those chops are still aloud to advertise on TV :erm: :mad:

When Marie told the Reserve Bank the money came from online gambling winnings, they informed the National Gambling Board who declared the money forfeited to the State

Thebi Moja, the board's acting CEO says the Gambling Act is clear; online gambling is not allowed in South Africa.

Thebi Moja (Acting CEO: National Gambling Board): 'A South African is not allowed to gamble online and no company [can] offer these facilities to South Africans. And no companies should entice by advertising that they can offer this type of activities to South African market.'

Define "online gambling in south africa" . Is it determined based on where I AM when gambling online? Or where the PROVIDERS are?

i.e. if i go across to Swaziland , whip out my laptop and gamble there on the exact same site , is it legal now? By that measure i can technically gamble on an australian site and if i win, i can tell the bank "i was not in South Africa when i was gambling". They will not be able to prove me wrong, in fact if they require some sort of passport stamp, then i freaking will cross the border for a weekend just for that.

i am extremely ignorant of these things, would playing overseas lotteries from here be the same thing?

The situation reached boiling point when the South African Reserve Bank intercepted the fifth payment of over a million rand.

The bank's Raymond Paola says they followed normal exchange control procedures when this payment was queried.

Raymond Paola (SA Reserve Bank): 'Any funds that becomes due to you offshore that aren't permissible you have to come and regularise it with exchange control and get permission from us to either retain it or repatriate it. We say 'repatriate', but you are subject to other legislation.'

I think the idea is to not let the reserve bank know about it. If they don't know, they can't take it away. If the money never enters the country they also can't do anything. Might be wrong though. I think you have to declare outside assets?
