Ok well firstly look at the state of the crime in SA and the justice that follows, or the lack there of. This crime is probably listed as petty so they just fine you. I dont think the cops really have the time to follow up on these incidents over robbery, rape and murder etc. So naturally i think they will get pushed to the bottom of the list.
Afterall is a speedy apprehension really required?
 
I think that he should have got at least a R25 000 fine and had his computer and all his equipment confiscated...

We pay through our noses for the small caps and slow connections that we have only to have some ..... come and steal it from us.
 
What do you do if your ISP's Pay-as-you-Go system stop functioning, and you're still able to connect and download like mad?

i did it, and after 6 months they found out. I'm now stuck with a R 8 000 bill for overusage. LOL

I even bought a giganews platinum account to make use of this bugged-service. 4mbps adsl FTW

You pay for your usage? And try to not let it happen again. Especially not on a Pay-as-you-overuse system.

Jesus dude Christ bandwidth in SA is soooo expensive and now we got ppl stealling and dont feel nothing fot that ppl. Makes me so sick!

I wouldn't pay because I would argue that they can't prove without a shadow of a doubt that I used all the bandwidth because their system was not working properly. How do they know that it wasn't another malfunction??

I'm sorry but he does have a point. People don't tend to hang out with others who do things that offend them.

Your friend should have his ADSL line removed and be banned from using the service - maybe that can give him time to think about what he has been doing.
 
admission of guilt fine...on the one hand at least we have got to a stage where the cops are doing something.

these cases are difficult for the cops to make stick in court because they do not have the technical expertise (and you have to start by explaining the interweb to the magistrate) so admission of guilt is a win for them but it is difficult to see how this will deter the friend from doing it again (and being a little more careful)

i am not 100% sure but i cannot see any reason why they could not confiscate the computer used in the commission of the crime (the stuff about holding onto the router until the fine is paid sounds like BS) which would be far and away the most effective way of dealing with this

OK that explains it then, thanx :)

IMHO permanently disconnecting the ADSL line or lines used to commit the crime would be even more effective than confiscating a computer, and the other problem is, how do the police know exactly which computer was used to commit the crime (they would surely grab the first box they see which might have nothing inside it).

Why are people so hostile here? I thought I'd let everyone know what happened to my friend. It's an interesting topic, I basically I thought you'd find it interesting that R1500 is all that happens to you when you steal alot.

More information. The cop DIDN'T take evidence, he was supposed to be he said he can't be assed, if my friend decides not to pay the fine, evidence is lost. Cop will take the blame, the search warrant was real and everything
 
If he doesn't pay the fine, he has to go to court.

I'll stop posting on these forums now seeing as I can't be assed with the bunch of hostile *******s biting at me for stupid reasons.

I wish I can find the person who steals some of my bandwidth every month.

Anything from 200MB to 500MB. It's not a lot but I pay for it. I reported the bandwidth theft to Telkom two months ago. Still didn't hear anything from them. Not even a reply to tell me they received my e-mail.

Geuss I should cancel my Telkom Internet Account and get another ISP.

How big is your cap? And how do you know that is the amount that is gone: online tracker compared to a download monitor on your PC?

The discrepancy between a download monitor and the tracker can be as high as 10% because most download monitors do not take the overheads of ADSL into account, same reason that on a 384kbps line you never get 48kB/s as an end user.

This sucks really since we are sold 3GB but of that 10% goes to overhead, so in reality you get a +/- 2.7GB cap :mad:

this would be no problem back home in Korea

I literally had free internet because we lived in apartment buildings and if one guy had wireless, we could all mooch off :D
