CCIE Security study group

Top notch, and worth every penny!

EDIT: Can't speak to the Security-related material though.

yeah, i was a bit unfair.
I heard the R&S stuff is extremely good, its why I used INE for security.
I found the v3 stuff lacking in explanations, and as i said, there are loads of mistakes.
Just browse the INE forums -> security sections to see them.

in case anyone else reads this whilst studying.

I am running into numerous bugs on ios 15.2x with regards to IPv6.
there are also some bugs on 12.4x with IPv6 that i run into.

Before you waste an entire evening as I have just done, try your config on different versions first.
as an example, ipv6 vti's (with and without rsa auth) didnt work at all on 15.2. Exact config works instantly in 12.4
OSPFv3 encryption doesnt seem to work on 15.2 either, but works 100% on 12.4
EIGRP v6 hashing fails for me on 12.4, but works on 15.2

Yay for stable code

Do I have it right that you have to sit for the lab within 18 months of passing the written for CCIE?

for your first attempt, yes.
Otherwise you have to re-do the written.

I think if you sit for the lab and fail, you get another 18 months.

Hey, nope you get 12 Months if you fail.. 18 months to do your 1st attempt.. then 12 months if you fail.

Any of you use the IOU Web Interface? Been messing around with it a bit and looks pretty good.
Also, what's the current version of the IOU? I have a TS one, and looking for a general RS one to build labs for.

Thanks

I have it, but dont really use it much. I will be using it when i do my R&S and service provider track, but for security, I find gns3 with some real switches and vm's for the other services works fine

Cool. Ya, I am looking at it specifically around the SP track, and looking to see if I can't incorporate it into the Data Centre/Storage Networking studies too. Looking at possible solutions for emulating NX-OS as well.

Guys,

I don't want this thread to dwindle away. I like the idea of a study group. not just for CCIE security, but for Cisco certifications in general.

I myself am busy looking at the CCIE Data Centre track, even though it's currently not being presented as part of the mobile labs coming to South Africa (and believe me I am fighting very hard with them [Cisco] to get it included!!).

I don't claim to know everything about everything, but I have no problem sharing my knowledge and a good couple of years experience with those looking to learn, and I expect the same in return. At the end of the day we are all keen on learning, I think that is evident.

How can we best accomplish this? Is the forum here really the best place for it? Should we look at something perhaps little more private e.g. a different forum/blog/social media group a la Facebook?

Come, let's hear some ideas!

Hey,

I created a shared dropbox account, where configs can be uploaded etc.
At the moment, I just mail a few guys with what i am doing and any issues i have or any issues I have found when studying (tricky things, things that stumped me, bugs etc)

I think its tough to include all disciplines though, unless you have people with extremely broad knowledge base.

I am planning on other tracks after the security, so I am keen?

Ya, I'll look at starting something for the Data Center track soon too if anyone is interested.

Getting to the 1 month till I write mark.
Unfortunately its not going well.
There are only limited workbooks available on a few of the topics (about 50%)

The topics i have done, i know very well, but the scope of work is so large, that i have doubts about a first attempt pass.

Will give feedback (that does not violate the NDA) after I write.

Good luck hey! Can you give us a quick run-down of the materials you've used to prepare, and perhaps your preparation strategy? Not sure if you've shared it previously, but I would love to have a look and see if I can't perhaps steal some tips from your methods ;-)
