Cell C clarifies employee suicide

Cell C has clarified its position regarding the suicide of one of its employees, following accusations from union Solidarity that the mobile operator’s retrenchment plans ‘probably led to the unnecessary death of an employee’. more

"Cell C said that the employee who tragically passed away on Tuesday was not at work on Monday or Tuesday and was not given any notification of possible retrenchment."

and no one has has access to the email on their mobile phones or laptops???
Totally disgusting response from Cell C!!!

I fail to see the logic in your statement.
Section 189A letters are handed out formally in writing, not by email.
"He wasn't given notice" doesn't mean he was retrenched without notice.

/facepalm
ie - he was not going to be retreched. Comprehension fail of note. Nevermind that the employess affected got email and SMS notifications, so your point is completely and utterly moot
Some people clearly need to learn to tone down their emotions when reading articles

edit: hold up, he was possibly on the list, but he wouldnt have known that until Tuesday

This employee could of had numerous ways of access to the work email and did not have to be at work to find out what was happening. Geez, even a colleague could of informed him of what was going on. Cell C can keep their 99c per minute call rate. This is shocking. Will not be moving over to them after this happened. Cell C does not understand that employees are people to who have feelings and emotions. To not consult with the labour Union first before issuing such considerations is just down right dirty top management play.

Yes, Cell C stated that the employee was not given any notice of retrenchment, but who is to say that another employee could of fed the wrong information to him? It is a possibility.

Could you make any more assumptions? :P

So if someone fed him the wrong information you're still disgusted with cell C?

How in the blue blazes do you think CellC is meant to consult with them!?

“We acknowledge that there is freedom of association as provided by the Labour Relations Act however we have not been advised by any trade union of the identity of their members. In particular Solidarity has not provided this information to Cell C despite a request to do so.

I don't think you kill yourselve over a retrenchment....
There must have been other issues...if this is not the case we would have sat with 150 suicides?

my Father had a heart attack and died after rumours of retrenchment, so dont discount the emotional impact of losing your job.

Either way Cell C completely failed, I hope the unions and this guys family make them pay a ***** load, cos what I am hearing about this incident is in no way as cut and dry as what Cell C is officially saying. A lot of chatter about this in the industry at the moment

How did they fail?
Did they fail to interact with the union? No, the union simply did not name their members. So how the heck do you propose you speak to a union about their members if you do not even know who the heck the members are?
Did CellC fail to notify anyone of the impending retrenchments? No, everyone got an email and SMS on Friday. Note how this notification didnt mean you were on the list, it just let you know it was happening
Is CellC going to consult with all the people on the retrenchment list? Yes, they are doing it all legally, exploring alternatives, giving counselling etc etc

You cant even really link the suicide to the retrenchment because the guy didnt even know if he was one of those people... so seriously, wtf?! How do you come to your opinion on the matter? Are you relying on "the chatter" which is probably all hearsay, and typical internet rumour wildfire?

People absolutely LOVE crying about "innocent until proven guilty" but if a corporation is involved that all flies out the window. Let all throw our toys out the cot based on wild rumours that have not been verified in any way or form (at this point in time).

That idiot who committed suicide has now left his family without a hope of him being a breadwinner ever again. Incredibly selfish of him. Retrenched or not. I am also expecting an onslaught of abuse for this statement, but having lived though something like this its my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

+1

My guess would be that this person already had certain things going wrong in his life and maybe was not performing very well at work. After receiving the email on Friday and the rumours starting to spread around him he decided not to go in the Monday and on Tuesday might of heard that people have been informed of the retrenchment and that was the last straw...

We might never really know what happened but I do not think we can directly blame Cell C on this one.

storm in a teacup....

show me a company that does not restructure at least every 5 years.....

people commit suicide, whether securely employed or not.....

How certain are you that he did not know?.

Irrespective of what really led to the suicide this is damaging to the company. The media will no doubt milk it in such a way as to point a finger at CellC.

702 has already started.
