How much it really costs to cancel your Cell C contract

Cell C customers who plan to cancel their contracts prematurely must be aware that the network charges an early penalty fee.

Under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), a mobile network subscriber can cancel a fixed-term contract before the original expiry date.

I am very sure I agreed to a SIM-only deal on a month-to-month basis with Cell C.
Recently I wanted to end my Cell C contract and port my number to another SP..
I was informed by Cell C that my contract T&C's have been changed and if I cancel i need to pay R554.00 (6 x R99.00) for the remainder of my 'contract'.
I am not happy with this

Surely that isn't legal. Material changes to contracts can't be done without both parties' consent.

I wish though everyone in SA would just stop taking out cellular contracts due to all the illegal practices going on.

This is exactly what I'm experiencing. I'v been on a R99 month to month contract with them for years, and when trying to cancel now I was told this... Did you end up resolving it, and if so, how?
