Cell C prepaid subscribers migrating to MTN in five more provinces

Cell C announced that it has successfully decommissioned 34% of its physical Radio Access Network (RAN) sites and seamlessly migrated prepaid and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) customers to roam completely on its partner network, MTN, via a virtual RAN.

In this first phase, the focus was in three provinces — the Eastern Cape, Free State and Northern Cape.

The company has stated that the migration in these provinces is now complete.

"In the next six months, Cell C plans to decommission a further 10% of its network sites, with a focus in North-West, Limpopo, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Mpumalanga," it stated.

still shows cellc also be ready for not very nice speeds btw. Mtn will throttle cellc users if the towers gets busy. How do I know this? Well mtn and cellc simcard in phone same tower ID and you might get 60mpbs on mtn and 10 mpbs on cellc

since MTN in certain areas has spare capacity, I bet Cell C just uses it up,
but since Cell C is a MVNO that gets sliced up even further.

Nothing. You are just running on MTN's radio infrastructure.

I just saw a blip of 5G in my area on MTN (not yet on the 5G coverage map).
I see it says Cell C still manages their own spectrum etc.. does this mean that they wont necessarily have 5G without the spectrum?
My knowledge on spectrums etc. is mostly anecdotal, since reception at my house is 1 bar at best it's not something I pay too much attention to..

So in rural KZN Cell C prepaid has been roaming on MTN for years now. Same tower - same spectrum. So the Cell C spectrum has not been activated yet even although all the Cell C equipment has been removed from the towers. Side by side speedtests reveal that MTN is throttling Cell C users. Cell C and MTN have exactly the same amount of spectrum so once the spectrum goes live the Cell C speeds should hopefully pick up. Or if part of the deal is sharing the Cell C spectrum with MTN they may not.
