Cell C Fibre vs other

Cell C service is generally good in terms of upload/download speeds and availability on Vumatel. However, they flash the software on the Huawei B315s router which means that you cannot use a VoIP phone service like Freshphone (freshphone.co.za). Freshphone allows one to get rid of Telkom and have a telephone line without the monthly rental fees. Freshphone call rates are also cheap and charged on a per second prepaid cost.

This restriction was not mentioned at the time of signing up and also on on their Ts&Cs. That's the only disappointment.

I have recently gotten Cell C fibre. The 20/20 uncapped

They partnered with Vumatel who has just recently set up the infrastructure

Yes Cell C supplied a Huawei B315

Vuma-tel supplied a Fibre switch which has the name Raycore on it

The deal is for R899, it is unshaped, unthrottled, uncapped

Also they pay for the the full installation, both cell c and Vumatel which in total is R4700 if i remember correctly

So far ive been gaming, streaming with very little if any buffering, the odd freeze of Youtube. But other than that its been really good.

The only thing i cant figure out,

The Raycore fibre switch has 9 LAN ports but cannot be used as a switch. Does anyone know anything about it

Just want to correct this.
On CoolIdeas it's R1710 with the 20/20 uncapepd/unshaped package, same package price. Any other package CoolIdeas > CellC. For VoIP, not sure why CellC doesn't have that option considering they're also a mobile operator. Cool Ideas: Mobile calls 60c per min; Fixed line calls 26c per min for R85/month.

I don't know where CellC got the R4750 figure tbh, anyone have an idea? The installation is R1750, the connection fee that pretty much every ISP absorbs is R900. Are they saying the router is R2000 when you can get it for R1600 (assuming this one)? Near every provider bundles a router.

Package included free instalation, free connection fee, free router (only has 1 port though so have to make use of a switch) and 1gb lte data, and 1st 3 months free.
All the free items are pro-rated if cancelled.
No issues thus far, so have not had to make use of their customer services

My installation by Vuma was completed quickly and professionally. The CFibre guys came the next morning (on a Saturday) to install my router.

CellC has stopped using Huawei vendor completely, and have brought in a Chinese "CellC Branded" LTE-A, Dual Band Router. The firmware is a custom cover of OpenWRT, and although its only a 2 port (Gigabit!), (and 1 is being used for WAN) its honestly a brilliant router!! Fast, runs well, the firware is good, can do all I need; SIP Natting, DDNS, Port forwards etc. So far nothing I cant do.

With regards to the speed of things, the CellC guy told me I am the ONLY CellC customer in the area, and long may it last! On my 20/2 package I get the following;

~23 - 25Mbps download
~2 - 4Mbps upload

Torrents are blocked, but that is no surprise. (Get over it people, start streaming legally!!)

Keep it up CellC, I am very happy!

Torrents are blocked? Completely? Even though I mostly stream, blocking Torrents is a deal breaker. No thank you CellC.

Theres a lot of perfectly legitimate uses for torrents.

Linux distros, indie film and documentaries, MMO client patching/updating, scientific data. Even Microsoft offers torrents on certain things.

Do not paint the whole ecosystem with the same brush

Torrents are not blocked. I never used torrents for years, but just to test it I have downloaded 2 torrent clients and 5 different torrents(magnets what ever you which to call it). 3 opensource files and 2 game content I legally own. All works.

Torrents on CellC works.

CellC does not block any port, no FUP, no Monitoring, no filtering.
The only thing they keep is IP per session for legal purposes. Which all ISP needs to keep.

Lot people complain about VOIP devices not working. I have 3 VOIP devices + the app.
The router they provide is great, only issue is 2 LAN Ports(One is used as WAN and so actually only one LAN port). The wifi connectivity is great, I got the entire house covered, over 13 devices. I bought an 8 port Network HUB to overcome the LAN port issue.

My VoIP is working 100%.. I did disable the SIP ALG / Helper stuff. Not had a problem yet.

I will test torrents again tonight, but odd, as I had about 10 loaded, and not 1 even found a peer.

Ultimately, I am very happy with the speed and service I have had so far. Long may it last!

Free : Wi-Fi/LTE router, installation, activation, 1GB/m data and first 3 moths. (24 months claw-back).

I'm on CellC 20/2 through Zumatel since Tuesday. They paid for the installation, connection and bunny router. Plus first 3 months are free.

Problems:

I was actually told on wattsup by their rep that the clawback period is 12 months.

Bunny router only has two network ports. Connection to the PPE box uses one port and the other port connects to my PC; meaning there's no port left for me to plug in my CCTV for remote viewing. CellC rep told me to buy a splitter connection but I was subsequently advised that this wouldn't work for my purposes and that I need a network switch (at least R650).

If they only gave you a crappy 2 port "switch" you would need to get yourself an extra switch and connect it to the second port on the "switch" cellc gave you. This will resolve the issue of connecting more pc's via network cable.

Seems pretty strange of them to include something so restrictive, perhaps this is their way to try and limit users not to share the connection out of the box with more people, who knows.

Not having a go at you, but why would they give me a router with only 2 network connections, with one of them needed to connect to the fibre box? My last two adsl routers had four network ports, plus a phone jack connection. If I get another switch it means more cabling, and another power brick to connect.

Another things is that I when I met with the CellC reps I'm sure that mentioned that I needed to plug in my CCTV, and that I had a PC.

I dont understand your response to my comment.

I literally stated that CellC is trying to be cheapskates and gave you the bare minimum for free as part of the deal meaning you need to spend more money to connect more cables pc's.

What you asked CellC ahead of time and what they actually provide is two different worlds. Most of these guys dont really listen to your questions and simply try to push through the sale then let you worry about the hassles afterwards.

What is the name of the wifi router they provided you with ?
