Cell C mobile broadband: Big things to come

with all this edge bandwidth... wtf are they using for backhaul? Telkom? DFA?

DFA and Neotel I think. They obviously still use Telkom for many of their transmission links, but I think the new links may be mostly from their new partners.
 
CellC is really turning around from the generally overlooked third mobile network to the customer-centric and affordable revolutionary. I say kudos to them and well done :D
 
I really hope Cell C pulls this thing off. If they get enough numbers they will force the competition to bring their prices down too.
 
I haven't had a contract in years and have signed me and my wife up with Cell C. Well done Cell C for making me believe that not all Cellular providers are greedy!
 
now they just need to make it easier for people to sign up for their contracts... their site submit button doesn't work, their in-store staff is useless and i'm getting pretty fed up trying to move over from vodacom. Trevor is not hearing me either... while all i want is voice + data for an iphone 4.
 
and is using microwave backhaul where fibre [-]if[/-] is not available.

With both Cell C and 8ta planning to launch new postpaid data services in future local consumers may be in for a treat in terms of mobile services and mobile data pricing.

This has better be only the start! They need to make their bundles more flexible and available to pre-paid customers.
They also need to have fallback onto EDGE because I don't give a crap if the data comes in at 25k/s as long as I get it for R33 per GB I am happy.

I agree. Cell C is certainly rolling out aggressively and must have a well thought out strategy. I can only imagine the other operators scrambling frantically in their emergency meetings trying to come up with plans to counter this move from Cell C. Some are probably feeling the warm stuff running down their legs inside their trousers. How dare Cell C come and spoil their fat profit margins on mobile data ! What I don't understand though is why Telkom with 8Ta chose to stick to the status quo and not follow the inevitable path laid down by Cell C ?

Must say to date my experience with CellC's new service has been good, had a few connection hiccups yesterday, but nothing serious... think I'm close to hitting the 2GB cap...

Here I have to, unfortunately, agree... I knew more about the offer than the young lady helping me, she battled to get the coverage map up on a in-store PC, I had to assist her... this while 2 other salesmen, who looked like they knew their story just watched, chatted, ate chips and chatted with friends... then while she was attempting to assist me, another customer walked in, saying he bought the data only option, and is using a E220 data card... I had to intervene and tell him the card is not 900mhz compatible, while the confused staff watched... Trevor... CellC needs to train staff properly! It scary when the customer knows more! My experience hasn't been all that much better at the VC stores... but that's no excuse!
 
Slightly off-topic. I don't understand these things so well, so please can someone explain in plain English, why the likes of Cell-C, Vodacom etc. are rolling out HSPA+ networks. I thought LTE has been proven locally and is being rolled out internationally. Why can't we do it here right now? Even Telkom's network is 'LTE ready' (according to a recent article). Is it because handsets aren't available or what is the reason for first rolling out HSPA+?

Lots of issues re LTE :
1) Handsets / modems don't support it.
2) Backbones cannot handle those speeds
3) Etc.

It's not really being rolled out internationally as much as you may think. For example, Sprint 4G in the USA is quite slow.
