Cell C promotes Android

Plus with no firewall installed or installable on a large number of Android phones, its easy for networks to go though your private data stored on your phone and still get you to pay for the data.

Interesting view you have. Last time I ran a port scan on my phone no port were open. Firewalls are only relevant when have open ports and you wan't to limit traffic to these ports to certain network areas.

I don't have alot against whatsapp, just that its only free for the first year and that you don't get a desktop client for it....They could've just added GTalk to their campaign, its part of what makes Android great. In my opinion, a little better than whats app. You get a Windows app, access to gtalk on your browser as well, so you get it on a lot more platforms than Whatsapp. And it comes pre installed on android phones.

Once cell c fixes this problem personally you will get 5 contracts from me and my clan. Till then, nada.

If I am not mistaken Whatsapp links to your address book(Cell Numbers), unlike gtalk that links to your Email contacts and have to be added manually so Whatsapp requires less admin.

Viber has more or less the same with regard to address book hooks but also does voice, only limitation is that it only works with your Android and iPhone friends and its free.

Personally I use a mix of Viber + Gtalk, if Whatsapp on Android followed the iPhone model I would have considered it.

It means email, app notifications, chrome-to-phone, whatsapp messages and anything else pushed to the phone is sometimes delayed by hours on CellC's network... whereas on Vodacom or MTN it is instant... (the way it should be)

And you basing this on what? I get my email on my phone before i get it on my local exchange...
if you want i can upload a youtube video for you...always use it to show off email push on cellc network.

Actually, all myfriends and family already on gmail is automatically on gtalk, so no manual adding for me. If I get someone I want to add, I just send him/her a gmail to his gmail account and its added.
And yes, Whatsapp links to your address book, but what if someone new comes around, don't you have to add him manually to your address book?

The issue is also that GTalk connections also stall on CellC which means no usable GTalk for me.

I think the main thing that I like about Viber (Agian I dont use whatsapp so cant say it works) when I want to send someone a sms I dont have to activity remember if they on Gtalk or not, I just type the sms and send to the cell number, Viber will check if they on it and use data instead of sms if they are.

And yes as you said you have to add the contact but today with Vcards and Bluetooth sharing as well as QT codes its much simpler to add a contact in my address book

Oh and if you want to generate one for your site / business card just go generate one here http://zxing.appspot.com/generator/

Once you save the number to your phone, whatsapp automatically adds the contact to your whatsapp list.

Mmmm...I wonder if Viber is "broken" on Cell C as well?
Perhaps post your observations in the linked thread mentioned earlier.

Edit:
Loaded up Viber on my two test phones.
No surprise...broken as well.
Observations in the appropriate thread.

My first question when I read this was "what's in it for Cell C"? They aren't doing Google's marketing for them out of the goodness of their hearts, surely.

Its not like Cell C would get better pricing or free stuff.

BlackBerry is most certainly seen as a platform. One doesn't want to read too much into it, but why is there no advert on the Cell C website saying how wonderful BIS and BBM are?

Because BB its limited and cost more where Android makes for cheaper phones and kind off endless possibilities.

Come on guys, the motivation to push Android is obvious.

There are android smartphones for every income bracket unlike apple. So they can target the entire market. Secondly androids can eat data like a pack of hungry sumo wrestlers if you want them to, this translates to higher revenue for the provider.

Hmm, more money and more customers. Definitely not what cell c wants. :P

If WP7 was up to the same level then they would be punting it too.

Yes Viber has the same problem, but with my workaround on 3G polling on 5 min's at leas my sms's work. Not a problem on my Vodacom phone.

Here's hoping I can get an Asus Transformer Wifi + 3G from Cell C.
If they sort out their data issues and provide me with decent coverage I would even port my Vodacom number over.

Jannie, if you're reading this, only covering part of my road does not allow you to make much money out of me.
In fact, there are many missing patches in your coverage map if you zoom down to the lowest level
