Cell C Speed Test Results

@Akafreakazoid thanks for the speed tests.

While more testing is probably needed these tests do make for some interesting questions.
1) Why if you are in Cape Town does the speedtest.net think Newlands (450mi) is further away than Johannesburg (300mi)? - Looks to me like they don't have all their peering sorted out. Which means if you are in CPT and you have traffic for CPT it will route all the way up to JHB and back down again to CPT.
2) Upload is very inconsistent.
3) International ping looks a bit high, would expect closer to 300ms.

@Morkhams. I think you right about the ports, I did not even notice that. I did think it was strange that I had to change my location on speedtest from Johannesburg to Cape town.

I like this thread a lot ..a lot of tests to see the true potential of the "4Gs" network... Atm with the results, a R3k for 12 moths is attractive but not overly exciting imho... I am online alot and only use 3g I have an MTN and Vodacom sim and will prob get a cellc sim...However i am 100% sure it does not matter which provider I use they all are equal in their capabilities... Vodacom already have upgraded most of their infrastructure to match the supposed "4Gs" network...

My last thought on this is:

Vodacom=MTN=CellC - They all suck the same - ... Free Wireless for all !!!!!

hang on! the performance of the different 3G networks might be similar but what about the price?? R389 for 2.3gb on vodacom or R308* for 10gb on cell c. i'll go with cell c thank you very much!(^_*)

* it looks like cell c are actually giving you 13 months of data for the price you pay, so if you have a modem already then this is the approximate figure it works out to.

Yeah i am expecting Vodacom and Mtn to come down in price if it hasn't happened by Jan ill get Cell C...

I'm in Cape Town (+/- northern edge of Parklands), and just-just got the 21Mbits dongle. Speed tests:

FTR, that's faster than I was getting with Vodacom sitting at the exact same spot (about 400Kbits/sec).

Tweaked my TCP settings a little (increased TCP window size), don't think it really made a difference, but here are more results:

NB, I have made little attempt to stop any installed software etc. from auto-downloading updates etc. in the background, so it's possible that these speed tests are a little unpure.

The previous tests were sitting downstairs; I moved upstairs where I thought I'd getter reception, and it seems to have made a big difference:


(CT to Joburg again) --- 6.9Mbits/sec --- nice --- up from around 3Mbits/sec downstairs.

Another New York test:

2.98Mbits/sec down / 1.86Mbits/sec up -- again, nice!

Of course, there is still hardly anyone on the network, so time will tell if the quality remains decent. Telkom won't provision more ADSL here ('ports full' indefinitely) so I'm happy with this so far.

Vodacom already have upgraded most of their infrastructure to match the supposed "4Gs" network...

Clearly not everywhere, I'm lucky if I get 400Kbits/sec during the day on Vodacom where I live. But Cell C, see above. Cheaper and faster, at least for now. I am very happy to see the end of paying Vodacom's data rates.

has anyone tested this is Stellenbosch yet? I am seriously considering purchasing a prepaid sim but don't want to fork out the cash if the coverage isn't really aa good as it shows on the coverage map.... The cell c store is also buried deep inside the concrete cube that is eikestad mall and the signal can't be very good..... Anyone? Anyone?

Why not go to the store and get them to show it to you in action? There is also the 7 day return clause (fine print indicates there is a handling fee).

It so happens I'm in Stellenbosch today, am sitting at La Romantica (Paradyskloof) and did a speed test to Joburg:



10.67Mbits/sec down / 2Mbits/sec down - very nice, Cell C keep this up.

Joburg: 5.06 Mbits down / 1.74 Mbits up


New York: 3.4 Mbits down / 1.09 Mbits up

The pings are not bad for wireless have to admit - aslo for international.. I am getting terrible pings with another mobile wireless provider.
