Cell C Speed Test Results

Uploading via ftp only goes at 32.67Kbps avg speed.
Downloading is fine 456.96 KBps avg speed
Same for ssh.
Uploading via http is fine 1.4mbs avg

Anyone else experience the same?

Hey guys,

I stay in midrand and saw on my phone today that I have 3G access. Did a speed test on my phone and got this...

Download: 2.86Mbps
Upload: 1.62Mbps
Ping: 103ms
Server: Cape Town

Cape town seems to be the only server I can choose and for some reason, after the test I get like a black page, so no link. I am charging the bateries of my camera and will take a phone later on.

Could it be here (JHB) soon? :)

Anyone else tried ftp upload and ssh transfers?

I haven't tried SSH (did you mean 'scp', I presume?), but I regularly upload stuff with FTP using Cell C, speeds are decent, speed varies from 1Mbits/sec to 3Mbits/sec upload to a US-based server. In fact, I now immediately connect my Cell C stick whenever I have anything to upload. FTP'd a 150MB file for a customer today, took about 10 minutes or thereabouts, would've taken about 4 hours on my 384/128 "ADSL" (if you can call the joke that is 384 kilobits "ADSL" in 2010) line. (When I used Vodacom 3G, the best speed I ever got was about 400Kbits/sec, and it was literally impossible to even FTP something larger than about 15MB without it disconnecting on Vodacom.)

Strange, with ftp i only get 384 speeds although speedtest.net shows 1.5-2mb/s.
Your speed have an effect if ftp is ssl enabled?

Oh hmm yeah um not sure, but that does ring a bell, I did notice that the first FTP client I tried also gave me +/- 384 speeds and I thought 'oh noes', and then I tried the commandline ftp in Win7 and it was super fast, so it could have something to do with individual ftp client settings/behaviour. Maybe related to passive mode, I don't know, I honestly never investigated it, I just use the commandline ftp client now.

K, will fiddle around tomorrow & see if i can get any faster speeds. Hope its the software & not CellC blocking / shaping certain ports.
