Cell C taking market share from Vodacom, MTN?

I spend almost R1000 a month on my mobile communications and I don't have any contracts. Personally I think contracts are for suckers. I buy my phones and other devices with cash. I would consider myself a high income earner. There are plenty of other people out there like me who have seen through the con of signing up for a contract and operate everything on prepaid, yet spend much more than the average contract sucker. So why are we basically ignored by the providers?

An extra 2.5M suckers having crap signal quality and dropped calls

so is Vodacom going to react to this by cutting data prices? you know if Vodacom do MTN going to do the same. one can hope

And lose out on bonuses? Please, they could be down to 1 x customer and nothing will change. Its similar to the gvt, they need to milk everything they can out of the customer.

You're being over looked because you don't provide annuity income for them.

Con of a contract? So does that mean you're on capped internet as well?

I'm on contract because it makes my life easier. Never have to worry about topping up or not having airtime when I need to make a call. My phone just "works".

To me prepaid is just a big hassle. Same reason why I'm on uncapped. I want things to just "work".

It's nice to see Cell C is gaining a lot of customers - 2,5 Million customers in 18 months is great. I wonder how many customers Cell C lost in 18 months?

I personally am glad I moved to Cell C last year, my airtime lasts (don't have to buy data bundles because that's included when I recharge airtime). Network quality used to be great for me, but now its going to **** slowly. I hope Cell C will solve its network issues, and fast if they want to continue growing!

No network is perfect BUT since I moved 4 lines to CellC from eMpTyN I am more than happy, saving about 40% on bills and also very happy with their Giga20 Data deal, DL speeds bt. 3.5-5Mbps.

It seems in the pool of disgusting Cell providers and leaders, there is only 1 network and leader willing and prepared to give the public what it wants and needs, that company is Cell C and that leaders is AKC.
Really sad sate of affairs we find ourselves in.
I will most definitely port to Cell C when mine is up as I will rather have crap service which I have already but pay a reasonable price as opposed to being ripped off.

Would have a better idea if the numbers were segmented. Voice, data and ports.
Data users will cancel and move to the cheapest most reliable service. Not so much with voice.

I would move both if I could. Cell C cannot be worse than my current provider, well perhaps it could but the cheaper prices will compensate

  • Dropped calls = nope.

  • Signal quality = varies greatly but is usually good when needed + at home it is really good where vodacom isn't

  • Do I feel like a sucker? Nope. I feel like I am not being fleeced and get real value for the money I pay. They add real value to their subscribers, which I do not see from vodacom or mtn.

And in the next 5 months my wife and sister in law will be leaving vodacom too.

I am happy to stay with Cell C while I can see that they are continually improving their network.

I ported to CellC from MTN and three months later I ported back. No use in having great data prices but the bundles expire because you can't use the data.

You miss one key point, call costs on prepaid and contract might be the same or very close now, but on prepaid some of that is not subsidising your handset, so unless you want freedom to move you are not really getting a better deal from most networks by going prepaid.

In short if you are spending R1000 bucks you could get some nice kit thrown in for "free" on contract, you would be locked in, but then that is the actual cost of the contract. I researched and calculated quite carefully and went on a contract due to this.

The operator’s building out 100 base stations a month – it can’t do much more than that.
a solid rate of knots Cell C!

It is sobering to be reminded Cell C and TM had no 3G 3 yrs ago and now cover a huge territory. Sure they are not everywhere, but appreciate what they have achieved so far. If you really need coverage in the far flung places right now, you still have MTN and VC as options, but then be prepared to pay for this.

I'm happy thanks very much. No voice or data issues

You clearly have never been on prepaid. Prepaid is no hassle. To recharge takes me less than 30 seconds and I can do so even with zero airtime. So no reason to run out, unless you run out of cash. Also, I only top up once a month if not every two months. You do not have to top up with R5 you know, you can do so with a R1,000 as well.

Convenience is definitely not an excuse to pay more i.e. be on a contract.
