Cell C to launch Wi-Fi calling soon

Skype is not blocked in SA. How is this innovative. I assume you have to pay both for the WiFi data and the local voice. Not very innovative and definitively not something to have a big ad campaign especially considering will be only available in 2.5 months time?

Can do this now on Whatsapp - so what extra benefits ?

Party A calls from a wifi connection to a normal phone. Completely different to skype and whatsapp

So I still need to pay for the Cell C package and the per second rate etc, but use my own infrastructure that I also have to pay for at home? No ... I dont think so. Then I will rather just use Voip from Whatsapp etc.

I am guessing this is a nice and easy way for them to not have to invest and or fix their k@k network while still getting your money.

Or am I just being a complete bitchy queen now? :D

Yeah. Looks like you get charged twice. For your WiFi network data costs then to connect to the network to reach someone on their mobile number?

This how it works in the US?

But definitely not seeing the benefits if you get charged to use the network (at standard or even discounted call rates).

Yes :D

I think the other comments are too cynical. Imagine your travelling in Foreign and want to call your mom. Walk into a coffee shop with free wifi, connect and phone like usual. Yes, it still might cost you the same (no info given,) but it is then a local rate. This is not a freebie, but very convenient.
None of the other [-]scammers[/-] operators would have even considered helping out the consumer. If you don't like Cell C's innovation, then go bend over for one of the others!

For roaming I agree, there it could be great if you can find a free wifi spot. But for local I think it is a foefie and they should get their own network up to scratch instead of trying to offload their issues onto consumers own home network infrastructure, or that of business that offers wifi hotspots. For me that is a cop out.

I would have my doubts though about billing when it comes to roaming and using wifi. Imagine you think you connected to wifi, makes a 60 minute call back to SA and then when you get home they bitch slap you with a lekker bill. I would be very hesitant :)

From the other story it would be stupid of them to not encourage consumers to use their own data network. It is their largest growth product. Allowing calls via wifi therefore signals to me that they are going with the flow and not trying to stop it.

Interesting point about not knowing how your call is directed. you can switch off cell data quite easily, but not voice. Wonder if it will work without a sim.

The VOIP apps work well but there are times I need to contact people who don't/can't use them or dial a landline and if this allows me to then it would be awesome

You will still pay for the call even if done via wifi, so there will be no benefit to you really. Benefit will be to Cell C mostly as they are still getting your paid for usage, but not using their own infrastructure. Where you will benefit is with roaming. Where you also might benefit is with connection quality. But then again, my experience with many hotspots have been really k@k. The connection offered is sometimes so slow that I just give up.

This is great, I can't wait for MTN to copy them and implement it.

Wonder if they will mark wifi calls as free or take it away from your bundle. The guys that don't understand what this means, it means you do wifi calls on your existing cell number. This is heaps better than Whatsapp or SkypeOut.

Yup meant while on roaming, WiFi is pretty much free everywhere while travelling and roaming costs are ridiculous so even if I pay local rates while overseas it works for me
