Cellular providers upbeat about iPhone

Maybe they've just been skim reading the news but I don't think they realise that they are in competition to be the network that gives Apple the best deal to capture the lucrative niche market their users represent.
This is not going to be just another Nokia that all the networks will have. In the first couple of years in all markets this phone is going to be exclusive to one network.
I doubt you are going to have to worry about seeing network co-branding on the phone itself either.

Ofcourse the networks are going to push these phones, they care mainly about the airtime or the 2year contracts.

Im sure the Iphone will be compatible with all Ipod accesories, and damn they have alot, so you can already imagine the type of deals the networks are going to come up with.

There can be only one!

Agreed BOBJones! You are correct, Apple will be very selective and I find it funny that none of the networks picked up on this. Just shows you how their view is very much focused on themselves. Besides.. we may only get (if we do!) the iPhone in 2008.

Why would they be selective? They want and need to sell the phones, why will they choose certain outlets over the others?

2008 is the scheduled date.

I bet they go with Vodafone in Europe (which means Vodacom here).

I bloody well hope they don't bundle the phone with the crappy vodafone live software

Because they can! Because they are selling a brand, not just a phone. And its a brand that has a dedicated following capable of paying premium prices.
Apple is targeting just 1% of the phone market and that we'll be about 10% of all the ipods ever sold.
The iphone has mass market appeal that will start with niche market sales.
You could go out and buy a Sony or LG or Nokia, but if you want to be cool you'll get the iphone.

There is nil chance that you will see anything other than Apple branding or OS X on the iphone. Just not gonna happen.

The flash RAM is smaller than than 30GB HDD and they need the space for the BT, WIFI and GSM aerials.
8GB is also much more memory than any other phone on the market.

Nokia's been at it for so long, you'd think they could make phones that did'nt suck!

The only specs I see for the N91 when it comes out in the middle of the year is for 4GB memory? Where did you see the spec for a 8GB version?

Oh... they have the technology alright... but they keeping it back to sell out all there older technologies first!!! :D

What? You saying their CFO is a complete moron that never heard of IRR?:)

OK, but that is a special edition, that doesn't look like it will be avialble here.
Bit of a brick though?

I cannot see the iPhone selling well in SA. The market here cares about compatibility and that is something Apple haven't got in this business. Just about everybody here uses Microsoft products - so I see a future for smart phones based on MS Mobile products here - like those from HTC. A smart phone that cannot handle MS Office products is too limited - no matter the looks and hype. Maybe MS compatibility will never be a requirement for the crowd into iTunes. If it is about music and video only then fine - but with the convergance of devices those in the market for a $500 device will want more than songs and video.

Place way too much reliance on Office and the MS backend. Its not the only platform out there. The user experience of iphone + mac is going to be awesome.
iphone is also not pitched as desktop replacement.

In that case I think I'll stick with the non-MS smartphones based on symbian or something else - I wouldn't want a MS smartphone when the smartphone viruses learn from their desktop cousins.
