CentOS backup HELP

I actually did not reach my laptop since then to actually try the rdiff option , but i will be more happy with the init level 1 option still even if it goes against all rules.
I don't even want to consider doing separate sql dumps and extras , with my little knowledge at this stage i want to play it dead safe.
If i can for now get my linux to stay in init 1 when i tell it to, i will be sleeping a lot better
