AFTER 13 months the Century City railway station has now been completed. It will be fully operational from next Monday, 31 May.

The station, situated opposite Century City, has always been an eye catcher for motorists, many wondering when the station will be completed.

After 13 months of hard work by the contractors, the station is finally ready for use. Mrs Riana Scott, Metrorail’s head of communication and marketing, said the partnership between the City of Cape Town, the developer, Rabie Property Group, and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) has resulted in a Turnkey design to promote public transport.

The station has been identified as a major park and ride linkage for the Soccer World Cup which is only two weeks away. Soccer fans can avoid traffic congestion by parking at Canal Walk and then taking the train from the Century City station to Cape Town.

The recently completed project cost about R450 million. The station is expected to draw a significant number of users from the adjacent neighbourhoods, the Century City office park and Canal Walk. For timetable information visit Metrorail’s website, www.capemetrorail.co.za or phone the Transport Information Centre on 0800 65 64 63.

The Mother City this morning officially welcomed the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s striking new Century City Station as well as the completely overhauled Cape Town Station.

Prasa has spent around one-point-nine-billion-Rands on improving its facilities and operations ahead of the World Cup.

Refurbishments of stations across the country have focused on renovating ticket offices and public toilets, building new paraplegic toilets, painting all buildings, fencing, resurfacing platforms, installing new station signage and upgrading lights and public address systems.

Century City 2010 Park & Ride facility

Century City will provide one of the three major Park & Ride facilities for the Cape Town matches of the 2010 Soccer World Cup. A total of 2500 secure parking bays will be available in the precinct, the bulk of which will be in the Ratanga Junction parking lot on the corner of Ratanga Road and Century Boulevard.

The parking tariff per vehicle per match day will be R20.00. This will include a free dedicated shuttle service which will transport parkers to and from the new Century City Station. On presentation of a valid match ticket, commuters will also be entitled to a complimentary return train fare to Cape Town Station. For matches held on weekdays at 20h30, the Park & Ride facility and shuttle service will be available from 3pm until 2am.

The shuttle will meet the last train that leaves Cape Town station at 01h00 and ferry parkers to their vehicles. For the Monday 21 June match which starts at 13h30, the Park & Ride facility and shuttle service will be available from 9am until 10pm. For the Quarter Final on Saturday 3 July which takes place at 16h00, the Park & Ride facility and shuttle service will be available from 10h00 until after the last train arrives at Century City from Cape Town Station at 22h45. The Park & Ride facility will be clearly signposted to assist commuters.
