Sure, you can see that bulge waiting to develop from the pothole it hit 1000km back, or the 2 years it lay out in a heap in the sun.... or not!

Look, how much will your tyres cost new? How much would the 2nd hand ones cost?

oh yeah dint think of that.. i will prbably buy new, but the shop i was at now to rotate had some second hand tyres with like +70% life at R250!!!!!
but then again, that price kinda makes me feel, "to good to be true", you know?
 
Retreads are ok but understand the risks.

1. It's a old tyre that's had it's tread replaced so any underlying previous damage carries over.
2. Go to a reputable retreader, ask them where they get their casings from and what the standard is for them to judge a casing to be usable for a retread.
3. Don't do high speed, or mad antics on the tyres, they have a higher chance of failure if stressed. If you drive normally, town driving or even shortish trips at 120, should be fine. Driving from Durban to Capetown at high constant speed may stress a tyre.

Little fact, apparently most aircraft tyres are Retreads :p Regarding their use, talking from experience as I used to use them on my old car where new tyre just weren't worth it. Only had one blowout on a long distance trip out of about 10 tyres purchased.

I've done it, and will never again. It's easy to polish up a tyre and make it look like you wonder why the guy took it off his car.

Do 100km's and you'll notice. Usually a shudder due to uneven wear which you can't see, or previous damage that has been repaired, like punctures on the sidewall, etc.
 
TWI on that tyre isn’t flat with the rest of the surface yet so you are probably fine for another month or three even.

Even if they stay on the front presuming it a FWD car.

Could just rotate them yourself in the garage and not fork out money for it.

And avoid retreads and second hand.

We take a risk everytime we start the car, he should be fine.

I hve rotated them.. i just thought. . The fact that i drive less than 90 km/h.. cant be that bad.. right?

Tyre Wear Indicator.

Check your pic there is a little block in the middle of the tread. (Lines up with an arrow on the side wall, might even say TWI).

When that block levels out with the rest the tyre is past useful.

As or 90km/h it’s kind of irrelevant.

The grip really matters around corners and when stopping. Even at 40km/h if your tires are shot you won’t be stopping very well.

Yeah, you are not wrong. In the same breath we take steps to mitigate the risk to ourselves in the form of insurance, medical aid, etc. every month. You are right, he should be fine. But he could also not be...

We are weird creatures, we are scared senseless of sharks even though the chances of even getting injured from a shark attack is so marginal it is not worth mentioning. We get into our cars half asleep every morning without considering it for a second. That is taking into consideration the percentage of people driving vs how many people swim in the ocean that get injured.
 
Dont buy second hand tyres. They are very expensive as they cost 30-40% the price of a new one with a 90% shorter lifespan.

RIP to Zulfi the Centurion ... ripped from our lives almost a year ago in that wreck ... but he will never be ripped from our hearts.
