"The latest results from the Project SA Web User survey - compiled by Webchek, a division of Research Surveys - says there is an almost equal split between the sexes when it comes to Web usage, with slightly more (51 percent) of users being female (49 percent male).

But the proportion of women using the Web has risen dramatically since 1999, when 60 percent of users were male and 40 percent female."

Thats quite high, telling us that the average citizen over here isn't surfing.

"Users over 55 have increased from 10 percent of total users in 2002 through 11 percent in 2003 to 16 percent last year;"

When i left the UK about 2 years ago, this age catagory was the fastest growing of all age groups.
 
Problem in south africa with people over the age of 55 is that very few can afford internet services once they retire. This I see happening in my work environment regularly when people who are retiring give up adsl or isdn and hope to survive the internet on dial-up - spending a lot less time on the net.

This is very sad.
 
Telkom sucks!

All Telkom's fault and Government is complicit!

Domestic users spend an average of six hours a week online and those who log on at work spend seven hours a week online. People generally are not spending much more time on the Web than in previous years. The change in the sample profile should be borne in mind;

I wish only 7 hours a week, try about 20 hours out of a day.
 
You should run a poll here to see the average age of the user and the percentage male/female. Would be interesting.

Well I am in my fifties and I as sure as nuts won't be giving up internet when I retire. But then I won't be able to aford to retire at the age of 55. Come to think of it, not at the age of 60 either, so I am going to have internet for a long time then:)

But I would hazerd a guess that the average age of person on this forum is around 38 and fifty percent are woman.

I would say at the very highest 20% women and an average age of 27.
 
ye I agree... the amount of male participation is much higher on MyADSL, even higher than 80% methinks. Don't know why though?? :eek:

I would rate the average age at about 30
 
mods, why dont you do a poll? I thionk it would be very interesting, and something you could use if you do go ahead with more advertising.

Most Users Using Office's Internet Connection Rather Than Their Home's Connection.

I have been running my own property web site (www.propshop.co.za) and looking regularly at the logs, it is quite clear that 90% of my traffic comes during week days and then plunges on weekends and public holidays to a virtual standstill. This was a complete surprise as I had always expected it to be the reverse. The vast majority of my week day traffic originates from company addresses.

What to make of this phenomenon? Could it be that the so called penetration of Internet usage is confined to corporate users only? Possibly, home users merely use the killer apps such as email and Internet banking before quickly logging off in fear of hefty monthly Telkom bills!!

....or that people do their property browsing from the office when they should be working, and spend their online time at home looking at pr0n!:D

Spot On arf9999. I should have given this more thought. After reading your reply, I think that we are nudging closer to an exact profile of our average Internet user.

I'd say that the 20's age group will even out with the 30's age group and be the dominant user base.

As far as gender goes, there's no way you can get an accurate result from a site such as this one, as it's undeniably true that males dominate the IT scene and this site is very IT based.

For myself, 38 year old male IT professional - pretty bog-standard demographic for mybroadband.co.za :D
 
You know its interesting, on my forum, all the traffic is also generated during office hours and 44% fall between the ages of 20-30. Although with the number of people I have on the site, you can't classify it as a survey

I would say that this forum should be a good representation of the internet user who wants to know what he is doing.

However, I dont think it will represent the whole internet user body. But it will be an interesting survey anyway. Looking forward to seeing the results.
 
Ozy, that simply tells us that folks over here like to do stuff on w/ends, like surfing, fishing, camping, partying, etc. a very healthy balance. :)
