Cheap home printer

Can always go for Ink Tanks

they not laser but decent and the ink bottles arent expensive they also print a few thousand pages.

For example the
https://www.techguysa.co.za/products/epson-ecotank-l121-single-function-a4-printer/
Currently going for R2700
Inks go for about R250 for black and again a few thousand pages (4500 Pages) vs tonners that cost a few thousand in somecases for less than that. Saw a pantum toner for R950

Same goes iwth the Canon G3410 going for R2800 (3 in 1)

pay more for the printer and pay less down the road, we using a G1420 canon i havent replaced the ink in 2 years still going kids projects and work over that (dont print a lot myself i think ive printer more for the kids than invoices and waybills locally)

This dirt cheap toner is a game changer, I use similar toner in my Samsung laser printer and it works flawlessly is high yield(1500 pages if I recall correctly) and outrageously cheap.
R140 for a high yield cartridge
Just be careful that's how my pantum died, cheap cartridge blew up in it and covered the whole printer in dust. Couldn't remember if it was the canon or it, wife reminded me it was the pantum.

For the longest time there used to be no generics available for Pantum and for their cheapie laser printer the replacement toner cost more than printer itself and they came in he box with a cheapie low yield toner.
There was a period in 2020 where there was cheap generics, not this cheap though. But cheap and it's why my pantum died :(

Yup I bought a brother ink tank a few years ago, the refill ink is still waiting and it's being printing for years no issues.

Are ink tank printers larger than laser printers?

Depends on the printer if you take a basic laser vs a ink tank maybe the ink tank is slightly bigger (slightly due to the tanks)

mine sits on my desk just fine mmmm staring at it maybe 40-50cm wide ish...or closer to 60cm

It was on tiles so luckily not that hard :-) but the pants had to go

found a used Canon Pixma M2540S for R300.
Uses 445 & 446 cartridges.

Decent option?

Going by the reviews on Takealot yours was an isolated case, for my HP/Samsung toners it was literally near all 5 stars and tons of them.

One noticeable advantage of Ink tank printers is they can run on a far smaller mini ups, even the tiniest laser needs 700w to heat the toner drum when they start up for the first time. Other than that u less you need colour printing laser is the way to go.

No that's old shtty fixed cartridge tech, the refilling is a nightmare, printing is garbage and the cartridges have chips that cause all kinds of issues.

If you need colour printing get a legit ink tank printer and if not just get a small laser they rule and they are tiny.
The only other advice I can give is make sure the printer you get has Wi-Fi, it’s a game changer beause you can put the printer anywhere in the house, out of the way, it doesn't have to be near the pc. You can also print directly from mobile devices and laptops, it’s so handy.

They are all generics probably made in the same factory in some place in China.
What are the reviews like for them on Takealot?
Now? This was 5 years ago and it was new so hardly had any reviews back then. I'm just warning that generic laser cartridges can cause a big mess. Not saying all of them, but it could.

Same could also happen with originals though?
I had a look at some Pantum generic toner reviews now and there were some negative reviews but none that I could find for exploding toner, most where for non compatibility and the cartridge dying.

okay is the Pantum a winner then?

That ticks all the boxes and has Wi-Fi, now just find the generic toner options and check what the reviews look like for the toner. That's what I did with my Hp laser, I've been happily running generic toner for the last 3yrs or so, R169 for a high yield cartridge, still on the same one with a spare just in case, what a pleasure.
