Cheaper DStv HD PVR decoder launched

I have a Active Powered splitter to the other TV's which enable them to send a signal back to the decoder using a TV Eye - which plugs into the aerial at the back of the remote TV's - best invention ever. Go to http://www.dstv.com/dstvsa/content/en/dstvsa/installation_options and download the Technical Manual if you require more info - but I suggest getting an expert to do the installation. Our decoder is downstairs and our daughter can control one DSTV channel and I the other remotely from different TV's upstairs, miles away from the decoder - using normal DSTV remotes. We can both set recordings as long as there are no time conflicts.

Active splitter plus a few more TV Eyes... got it. Many thanks for the info.

Blagh... this still does not help me much.. is all dstv decoders going to be PVR with dual LNB meaning you have to pay the extra 60 bucks per month. All I want is a standard non-pvr nothing fancy 1 channel at a time HD decoder at a good price. That's it. I just want HD please.

Xtraview:
"The system requires newer decoder versions to function – 1110 or later – and unfortunately older decoder models (Pre-1110 and PVR) and not capable of supporting the service"

Is this true?
Yes

You can request not to use the PVR subs part, then wont be able to record, pause etc
But if you are already paying R529 an extra R65 for those features is well worth it, i challenge you to use PVR functions for a month & then cancel it

Still the SD PVR decoder is much better than both HD decoders... 2 channels + recording...

100% agree with you on this. The HD PVR feels more like a lousy gimmick.

I am very happy with my SD PVR and it is unlikely that I will upgrade it for a long time.

What is the difference between the 2 hd decoders? and no, I am not going to read the entire other thread for this Q.

haha ja probably true but that extra 65 pushes it up to almost 600 rounded off. I really don't watch that much tv and already wonder if the 529 is justified but all I really want and need it for is sport. All the sport I can get. And if the sport was in HD I would be extra happy! I never really feel the need to record sport unless it's a final and I'm not going to be able to watch it, but once you know the outcome of a sporting event then I don't really take the time to watch it again.

Okay so how late in the year do they mean they will add DOD and Series Record funtions? August? December?

They have been promising these features since I bought my SD PVR in 2005. Almost 5 years later and the software is still no much better even with these new HS PVR's - worse in some cases.

and that costs you R1k? :O

Dude this new BABY PVR has less tuners - it only has 2 tuners as apposed to the 4 tuners that the DADDY HD-PVR's have..... that is where the R1000 has been saved...

As a result, you can only record one show at a time and the DSTV ON DEMAND, when it is working, will only download when there is no recording active on the decoder.

I bought my baby yesterday, installed today and I LOVE IT - waay better than the 4 tuner decoders!

It doesn't work like that, you probably thinking of how the SDPVR worked but this is completely different. Once DOD is implemented it will be able to download DOD data at the same time as recording

So why the need for a 4th Tuner in the BIG HD-PVR? All it does is download ON DEMAND and the TV GUIDE

I think its just easier that way, the design on baby is much more complex in order to have DOD & recording in 1 tuner, but yes Pappa could've probably worked with 3 tuners but 3 is an odd number & all LNBs, multiswitchs are even so it wouldn't have made installation easier

the BIG-HD-PVR is on special this weekend and Hifi Corporation for R1999 the same price as the baby HD-PVR. Therefor makes more sense to go for Big-Daddy.

Got ripped off badly by this PVR 2 thing! You have to pay another R700 or so for a signal splitter and then found I was suddenly being charged DOUBLE subscription (R1300/month) for extraview. Apparently my SD smartcard was outdated and needed to be replaced, but nobody told me that when I phoned the call centre twice and also physically walked into their main support centre to buy my unit. I only found out by accident I was being double charged! Now have the choice of having service suspended, or taking time off work, driving right across town and braving those ridiculously long queues once more!

Also didn't appreciate the original 25 minute hold on the call centre call to find out I was being ripped off!

Oh yes - and there's the R120 for the new smart card (which is for Multichoice's benefit, not mine!)
