It means you cant do a direct conversion between rands and dollars to do a fair comparison. e:g here bottom paid staff earn R5 per hour, with this they can but 1 can of coke. In America, the bottom paid staff receive 5 dollars an hour and they can buy 5 cans of coke. So if something here costs R210, and in the states it costs $30 (210 divided by 7), its not equal, since they have much more bang for their buck. For some reason no one understands this, sigh.

Let us also not forget how much is costs to get the DSL connection running.

I paid Telkom R300 to install my line, fair enough, the guy had to do some work to get a telephone working. But then I had to pay Telkom a further R600 for the installer to make a phone call to have my DSL connected. go figure.

You were totally ripped off.

You should have gone for self install and do it yourself.

its really not that hard.

Just did an adsl install for my uncle yesterday. took 30 minutes.

Honestly can't expect telkom to provide a free line, all other ISP's are free to build thier own networks.

That's like saying we need to pay a "road rental" to use the road. Telkom built their network on tax payer money, they charge you to install it, they charge you [and anyone else] to put traffic on it , and then on top charge your a monthly fee just for having it . Yet people go crazy when they put up tollgate aka "road rental" in Gauteng, i suppose you're not seeing this.

You're kinda asking BMW or Toyota to "build their own roads" .
