Checkers launches smart trolley

Checkers has announced the launch of a smart trolley that lets customers scan items as they shop and skip store queues by paying directly on the cart.

The retail giant says this is South Africa’s first smart trolley. Called the Xpress Trolley, the technology being trialled at two Checkers stores in the Western Cape.

But what then, I'm sure they won't be let out the store. They will dissappear at speed. Talk about a hobo status symbol.... :)

The Checkers they are piloting this at actually have proper trolley staff in the parking lots instead of pretend car guards so that won't be an issue.

They're just semi-smart, still have to go through a till.

interesting idea, at least those little coin boxes with a chain attached, where you have to put a coin in the slot to pay for a trolley hasnt yet come here.

although reading this comment Checkers or PNP will jump on the idea soon enough

Heh? There's no till.

I actually saw them prepping this on the weekend not sure what was going on as they were pulling out the "express queue" for less than 10 items.

Think I saw those in Sydney. Horrible idea

When they are finished, shoppers can go to the dedicated checkout lane and pay directly from the trolley using the bank card saved on their Checkers Sixty60 profile.

They must then take the printed till slip and exit through the checkout gate. A concierge will be on hand for support.

Close enough.

Close enough.

You have to go out somewhere.

It's just a dedicated channel to the exit and I would imagine someone being on hand should you have an issue. I can imagine kak with barcodes not scanning etc.

I'll test drive it this weekend and report back.

Now more than ever I need them to allow you to sync the Checkers60 app with Apple Reminders though, that will completely change the game.

so the Crapple fanboys with their $19 cleaning cloths can have something to ask siri to do.
not use something as primitive as their fingers on a filthy touch screen like an ape.
Oh... I feel like purple face now.

That would be great, though.
