Chemotherapy

No individuals reacting differently, let us know how it is going and best of luck.

My prognosis:
Yesterday I had the guts to ask the oncologist for my prognosis, I did not ask ask before and they didn't tell.
I have been give a time period of 18 - 24 months, and taking into consideration that I might survive for longer.
The chemo therapy buys me a few months.

I thought I had more time, I thought I would live for another 7 years possibly, but the size of the tumor and the amount of nodes effected was great in my case. So again I am in 'cancer shock' all over again.

Additionally I come with a warning to all of you from my oncologist:

Skin cancer is a fast growing cancer in especially white people.
Skin cancer is one of the cancers that is fast increasing all over the globe.
Radiation from the sun has increased at certain latitudes, eg southern hemisphere countries : eg Australia, New Zealand, southern states of America and South Africa. ( some Northern countries are also effected because of latitude and ozone depletion. )

Light or red hair, blue or green eyes makes you or your child a high risk.

I think my sense of humour is having a stroke, I can't stop thinking about the funny side of death and strangely enough I feel relieved now that the pressure to be happy and enjoy life is on hardcore

FRAK wrathex i never expected to read this. i thought you were pulling through this cancer stuff. didn't expect to hear you had some life expectancy.

there are no words. sorry to hear this man, go out and spend all your time on yourself and be selfish and spend the last bit of cash you have on yourself. :)

So she had the first session of chemo last thursday. Went OK, no nausea, nothing. Then on Sunday and MOnday it hit her. She was feeling really KARK. But she is doing so much better since then. Only another 5 sessions (15 weeks) left.

I am so sorry to hear about your prognosis. You'll be in our prayers.

Yeah, melanoma isn't curable at the later stages and even at earlier stages, it's prone to recurrence. Chemo and radiation is mainly aplliatilve and to extend life-expectancy.

For those who don't have experience with this, here are a few things to remember.

1. Stay out of the sun and if you must go in the sun, wear some serious protection.
2. Know your ABCDE:
- Asymmetrical skin lesion.
- Border of the lesion is irregular.
- Color: melanomas usually have multiple colors.
- Diameter: moles greater than 6 mm are more likely to be melanomas than smaller moles.
- Enlarging: Enlarging or evolving
3. If you're over 30 and new moles are forming, get it checked out.

wrathex: You're a brave lady for finding out what's really going on. Now that you know, you can focus on making the most of the time you have left. The only thing we're guaranteed in life is death and your life has no less meaning because it's shorter. You raised some wonderful kids, experienced the good and bad things life has to offer and lived a full life. And it's not over yet... None of us know what lies around the corner or what the future holds for us. All we can do is make the most of the time we have.

Rock on, wrathex!

@wrathex, I know this is devastating news especially after all you have been through, the oncologist has given you an educated guess, but it is possible that you might still survive this (you will know better than any of us), live your life to the full with no regrets and don't focus on the prognosis and timeline as that could be a vicious circle that is self fulfilling. There is still time left for you to do some of the things you might always have liked to do, hopefully doing these things would take your mind to a better place and just maybe you can prove the oncologist's educated guess to be incorrect.

Very sorry to hear Wrath.

It's not impossible to kick this in its ass STILL.

I worked with a lady that got told she had late stage tummy cancer. she was told she had months.

it got cleared & the last i heard she's still clear 9 years later. :):D

Been reading this for a while now. I must say it all sounds horrific. I just hope for some miracle now. Wish there was more that could be done.

Hi Wrath ... I'm deeply saddened by your prognosis. Is this after doing a PET scan? I was initially told that I had a 25% chance of living a further 5yrs. Luckily "touch wood" I am managing to beat those odds. Please keep us up to date on your progress and love, luck and prayers to you and your family.

As soon as they start putting you on daily Cortisone, look at getting "space cakes"
It works better for the pain, and approves your appetite.

This is now really scaring the heeby jeebies out of me..... My wife is starting her chemo tomorrow for breast cancer ...
Looks like we are in for a rough ride... But then maybe not. It probably doesn't affect everyone the same does it ?

Amazing...... how time flies.........
We have only got 2 sessions left, since i posted this..
But ****, chemo only ****ed her up. i feel/felt so helpless sometimes.

but only 2 like i said.... then the Brackhar(sp?) to see if it's genetic. if it is then another mastectomy, and reconstruction.

What a year it's been !!!!!!!!!!

I HONESTLY CAN NOT IMAGINE WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH WRATH

YOU ARE IN OUR PRAYERS
