Not sure whether this belonged here or in "Food" section.

The procedure for the slaughter of animals for halal consumption appears strict.
The animal must face mecca & a prayer has to be said by the person responsible, either muslim, jew or christian.

How is this possible with chickens - probably one of the most consumed meats.

I'm not sure but I don't think that the animal needs to face Mecca

Dhabihah: method of slaughter[edit]
Main article: Dhabihah
Dhabīḥah (ذَبِيْحَة) is the prescribed method of slaughtering all meat sources, excluding fish and other sea-life, per Islamic law. This method of slaughtering animals consists of using a well-sharpened knife to make a swift, deep incision that cuts the front of the throat, the carotid artery, windpipe, and jugular veins. The head of an animal that is slaughtered using halal methods is aligned with the qiblah. In addition to the direction, permitted animals should be slaughtered upon utterance of the Islamic prayer "in the name of God."

Found an interesting article regards mechanical slaughter

The scholars of Fiqh have stipulated that the slaughterer must meet the Islamic criteria for the slaughter to be valid.* He/she must be a Muslim or a believing Jew or Christian.* There exists a definite doubt as to whether a machine meets this requirement.*

For example, it would not be acceptable to train a robot to perform the postures of the prayer, recite the Quran, and lead the congregation as the Imam.* Many scholars have declared mechanical slaughter to be unacceptable based on this point alone and they have declared all the chickens slaughtered to be unlawful.

Another major issue regarding mechanical slaughter is the issue of reciting the name of Allah.* Many schools of thought including the Hanafi and Maliki schools maintain that it is a requirement to verbally recite the name of Allah on each and every animal slaughtered.* They base their view on numerous verses of the Quran and hadiths of the Holy Prophet which emphasize the need to recite the name of Allah.* Allah says in the Quran, “Do not eat from an animal upon which the name of Allah was not recited.”*

Facing Makkah is preferred, not conditional.
This is achieved in most SA plants by having the line in such a way that the chickens are hanging facing toward Makkah.
Some plants don't have it facing in that manner; it isn't much of an issue though.

The slaughter is achieved by having 3-4 Muslim slaughterers on each line. Each have to sever the neck of each chicken as it passes him, on average at a rate of around one chicken every 5-10 seconds.
He has to utter the name "Allah" upon each animal.

Is there a reason why Rainbow chickens (kfc; nandos, etc) which caters for majority non Muslims is certified halaal?

Is it something to do with religious rights in our constitution.

You do realise KFC and Nandos are Halaal

Not in SA. I'm speaking under correction - but at the processing facility in Reitz the chickens are stunned with a electric bath, then go past a Imam who slits their throats.
Quite ironic - most used method in Germany - gassing.

A Company that I previously worked at produced circular blades for chicken slaughtering machines for a chicken firm in Natal. I wonder where they used them?

That would be rainbow chickens - kfc's big supplier.

Using the mechanical blade methods or stunning by "electric bath" are no different in principal to the pneumatic bolt method (deemed non halal) of stunning used prior to slaughter for larger cattle.

From britain's leading halal authority:
The most common practice found in a majority of the larger abattoirs is machine slaughter or mechanical slaughter. This is when the slaughter is carried out by a mechanical rotating blades with no Muslim slaughterman present either to perform the slaughter, or to recite the ‘Tasmiyah’ on each individual slaughter. Thousands of chickens are slaughtered in this manner daily. Again, the practice of blessing the blades, playing prerecorded bismillah or even appointing a Muslim to recite bismillah as he switches the machinery on, is common instead of reciting bismillah on each and every animal slaughtered manually. This practice is directly against the teaching of Islam and will not serve to conduct a Halal slaughter.

So it would appear that all those chickens served up in KFC (& many other places) masquarading as halal - may not be halal after all !

I was under the impression that the animals must be fully conscious when the throat is slit and it bleeds out for it to be Halal?

Rainbow uses hand slaughter.

Hence my question.

90 percent non muslim clientèle. How did they come to be halaal.

This is what p1ss3s me off too. If KFC had to pay a Christian Pastor to pray over the chickens before slaughter everybody (especially all the militant liberals on here ) would crap their pants. We pay for it to be halaal and no-one blinks an eye.:wtf:

Seriously WTF. I believe in live and let live, but that does not mean I want ANYONE to pray/speak positive thoughts/do rituals over friggin nearly everything I buy.

Have a special line for those who needs prayers over their food at the time of slaughter, AND LET THEM PAY FOR IT...not me.

The chicken must face Mecca, before they liquidize it and make McChicken nuggets.
A little prayer is also said for each and every chicken.

It's a tough job, but don't worry, a small portion of your meal goes towards paying all the people who make sure millions of chicken's face Mecca.

In the USA all halaal McDonalds have been closed down now, people were suing them because it wasn't really halaal lol
