No more Gmail for China

China has blocked the last remaining way to access Google’s popular e-mail service, experts said Monday, as authorities work to establish “Internet sovereignty” by controlling what enters the country via the web.

632 million people. When they realise that they have the power, they will overthrow their oppressive government.

But then, most are content to sit back and wait for others to do something. There are even people who favour their government because they don't know any better. Wait, are we still talking about China here?

i think i will be REALLY REALLLY pissed if a government blocks my email access . its much more than just a communication tool - most business run on email, personal correspondence is stored there etc etc..

its like taking away your home address... sorry you dont exist anymore?

yes i know other email providers exist, but really, whats wrong with gmail (minus now the https encryption)...

It's Google. Google is a search company. They want you to find information, and use them for that (so they can sell you advertising). They have also taken a stance against censorship. The Chinese government is in the business of rewriting history and propoganda, which doesn't lean itself to having people have free access to information.

Also, Google competes with Baidu, and they are more willing to listen to the government. So the government repays them by getting rid of Google.

China and Russia, yes. We have tied our fate to these two paragons of freedom.

Personally I don't see modern Russia (despite its circa 20% communist support) as a threat to freedom. I find Russian media (especially RT) as open and transparent and Putin as upstanding and straight to the point.

And their excellent human rights. Please see how they treat the people in Russia that are openly gay. Like valuable members of society. Because minorities or people we don't like doesn't deserve any rights in a modern society.

*shrug* You want to discriminate against other people, based on gender preference, race, creed, or any other measure? Go right ahead. No skin off my back. I just don't want to be associated with you.

Surfing the internet via relays can allow one to choose the exit node, where it appears that you are browsing from the country where your selected exit node is situated. Selecting China is interesting. They certainly have controls on the internet, but nowhere near what the media articles claim. Basically most of the content of these articles is pulled from a propagandists **** rather than being proper journalism.

Picking a country like South Korea that is friendly to the US is a different matter. They are everything that the media claims that China is but there is very little criticism in the media.

Even some first world countries can have their points of irritation regarding control compared to South Africa. It is for the good of the people apparently.

lol wat ?

So you're telling us we've been wrong all this time ? China is a hippie loving, free country and South Korea have the despots in charge ?

haha ok

I love putin! I hate China and we are going to become a Chinese factory

Blank assumption was made that gay-friendly society is a modern society.

Modern societies should have NO need to discriminate, or be bigoted. Discrimination of any kind. In practice it happens, but it should not.

Another blank assumption. Complain in other section, this is off-topic.

I'm surprised that our own Government hasn't already blocked Gmail. I send lots of Gmails to our Government, with a CC to JuJu with the subject line of "pay back the money"
