Hey guys

Quick question, I've been looking at getting this http://www.antelife.com/jiayu-g2f-gsm-version-mtk6582-quad-core-1-3ghz-4-3inch-hd-ips-screen-1gb-4gb-dual-camera-smartphone-black.html phone, which I need as a cheap replacement for my stolen iPhone, and which gives me access to pretty much all the apps that I generally used. My only issue is the frequency bands, the website lists that it supports: GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz and TD-SCDMA 1900/2100MHz (yes I know TD-SCDMA is only available in China). My question is whether the 900/1800MHz bands will be compatable with the Cell C 3G network. I don't think I will be able to stand being stuck on an EDGE/2G connection.

Please can someone from Cell C or the MBB forums advise me as to whether it will work firstly, and if I have a reasonable idea. If there is a post regarding this, kindly direct me to it, couldn't find

Then that's not the phone for you. It only supports 900 MHz for 2G. TD-SCDMA is their version of 3G, and even if it supported UMTS, it doesn't support the 900 MHz 3G band.
 
HAve you looked at an iocean

or their octa-core if you have R1000 more to throw around

just do some homework- antilife says 3g 850 and pandawill 900

Looks Good, think that there was a bit of a typo on their website saying that 1280x720 has a 440PPI :whistle:

EDIT: I have pretty much been sitting here browsing around, was just a bit uncertain about the WCDMA thing, thought it was an entire different technology to what our local 3G uses.

I figured as much, any other suggestions, running around like a headless chicken on campus without a phone.

Just as a by the way, is anyone able to explain what this means:
Networks (North America):
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
CDMA: Band Class: 0/1/10
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8/19
LTE: Bands: 1/2/4/5/17/19/25/26/41

Networks (Rest of World):
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA: Bands: 1/2/4/5/6/8
LTE: Bands: 1/3/5/7/8/20

It was taken from the spec sheet of the nexus 5 by the way
 
Ah, *THIS* chestnut, so much of fun! :twisted: I ran into this in November 2012 when I got a Jiayu G3 and got burned by the lack of 3G on 900MHz. Which means I run a Voda SIM for data (only), but it's more or less worked out okay; I now know better for next time is all. Which brings us to: what are you after, mostly from a $$$ standpoint?
 
Yea, been reading around, just wanting to make sure, turns out its a good thing I asked. Basically, all I need is a touchscreen phone (obviously), with a 4-5 inchish screen, a 720p screen is pretty much a must. Preferably using a quad core CPU with a decent GPU... that being said, my budget is only around 2k preferably, I'm looking at 2500 max, but I really liked that Jiayu because it had pretty much everything I wanted, at around R2k. Now if only it was possible to get a Nexus 5 or a Moto G in South Africa at the price in the US.

Surely it doesn't run iOS?
 
So why not scan the local usual suspects for a Galaxy S3? You have pretty damn good odds of at least hitting the R2500 mark, and just avoiding the whole .cn import thing altogether.

so apart from that, how was the phone? and how good was the camera?
 
I ordered the ZTE Nubia Z5S Mini from china and flashed it with MIUI V5 rom, which is officially supported and receives the weekly updates. It's pretty darn sweet, Snapdragon 600, 2GB, 13mp camera (crappy lowlight pics tho). Love it. R4k with DHL 3 day shipping..

No 'was' about it, it's still my daily driver; and will remain so until I can stump up the scratch to get a successor. That said, it's competent, if a little flaky: I've had sporadic bouts of the UI losing its mind and reverting to a plain black desktop, a restart clears this; and it doesn't happen very often either ..not even since the (very quick in and out) dunking it took last week or so. I walk around with 'phones in, usually listening to radio (and if not that, then music from the card) all day, every day, and it still copes but I do have to recharge every night. I'm now after a new battery as this one has worked nonstop and I can't shake the notion that it's developed a bit of a bulge. The dual standby just works, and I can be called on both/either number any time (network dependent of course). The UI isn't really laggy (but isn't like my SO's shiny new LG G2 either) enough to be a bother. Navigating via the GOOG Maps app gets ...interesting as it seems to lose lock, but then I have it half way down the dash inside the car too; when I get a proper (on-dash) mount I'll watch for better behaviour. And it's stood up to quite a fair bit of ...rigourous use :o.

On the strength of the 3G on 900MHz issue alone I won't get a Jiayu again, there are other phones that don't have this failing.

As to camera sample: taken this afternoon in shade where the near flower was < 10cm from the phone and the rear wall is ~40cm away. The flower in the middle distance is closet to the real colour. Also, all the bad-parking pix I take are with the phone if you want more of a sample range.

That is really nice quality. I always heard that these chinese phones have terrible cameras, so that was the one thing putting me off, but that is perfect for what I would use it for. In fact that is probably as nice as my cannon point and click. These chinese phones are looking more and more tempting by the day.
One more question if I may, did you use the free shipping and how much was the import duties?

I do also have a extra THL chines android laying around here that only supports 2100MHz 3G. Cellc does indeed have some towers running on the 2100MHz band. I seen 1 here in Richards bay CBD but mostly 900MHz but they do have some 2100Mhz towers scattered. Not sure where they decided to put them but I would think they put them in high traffic areas.
 
Got the Acer Liquid E2 from Orange for R2,200
Been using it for about 6 weeks, and pretty stoked with this phone. Very responsive with JB 4.2 and 1gig ram, 8 mp camera - for that price an absolute bargain
And I use Cell C and Vodacom in it - dual SIM ;-)
