It's about time.....

Johannesburg - After 25 years of production, Volkswagen South Africa (VWSA) is retiring its iconic budget hatchback Citi Golf.

The Citi is a South Africa-only model and over its lifetime more than 377 000 units found owners. Together with sales of the first Golf model (the A1) on which the Citi is based, more than 517 000 vehicles have been produced on the same platform in Uitenhage since 1978.

The Citi will be replaced by an as yet unnamed entry-level product in the first quarter of 2010 However, VWSA MD David Powels said given the German manufacturer's global model line-up, the new vehicle would inevitably be priced higher than the R87 000 the Citi is retailing at. The original Citi cost R6 700 at launch.

I asked them at the time and it was still a touch and go decision. Things have changed since Feb 08!!

A year or even 2 is nothing in the Motor Industry man. It takes years to plan & execute running a model out & a new model in. This decision has been made already & I bet the suppliers are already having their new jigs made.

Fscking about blerry time...

*does happy dance*...

The Lupo or the Fox would be decent replacements for the CitiGolf if you ask me... much newer design methodologies went into them...

I know. One of my sisters works for the company that supplies all the headlamp units and another for the company that supplies the wiring harnesses....

Have buddies in the plant finance dept and another in the marketing dept. Plenty of acquaintances on the production line as well.

Forget it being such a popular car among the students and younger generation; the car thieves are going to be mourning this as a huge loss to their industry!

Then it makes sense then. Why would they change it if the infrastructure / suppliers are already in place. This will make for a smooth run in of the new vehicle.

I worked for Daimler Chrysler (Mercedes Benz) for almost 8 years, I also know how it works.

Good riddance to that Totally uninsurable deathtrap.

wait lets put a brand new modern fuel injected engine into a chassis and brakes designed in the 1980's, put it in the hands of 18 year-olds with no roll-over, side impact protection with no airbags. That should help those arrive-alive targets.
