This past weekend was the worst. Connects for like 10 minutes and then drops the connection.

At the moment i think anything will be better than what we currently have to deal with. average ping we have is >50, maximum stable line sync speed is ~3mbps instead of 10.

I'm expecting it will be a mission to get telkom to sort things out, but hopefully I will have better internet in the end.

Will give them a call today and see what they say about VDSL coverage because AfriHost claimed Telkom told them 'no VDSL' some time in December.

Also, Some people have mentioned they can get VDSL but only 20mbps - which indicates that no Fibre is involved because ADSL can actually go to 24mbps... so they MAY have sold you 'VDSL'

It can't be ADSL as my router is using VDSL modulation and as my first speedtest shows I got 2mb upload. No some setting has changed on their side and messed up my line. I just have no idea who to contact about this as most of the people at the call center don't know what VDSL.

Service on 021 686 exchange (is that Clareinch?) atrocious these past few weeks. Getting worse too. Authentication problems continuously. I have a DSL 2500 modem set up with both a PPPoE and a Bridge connection. Line syncs OK (mostly) but PPPoE drops frequently. Huge authentication problems when trying to connect. In past have been able to connect via the Bridge connection setting up the PPPoE connection on the PC. Lately have to redial up to 30 times with Authentication errors. I have an Afrihost account too as a backup and I generally connect 1st time via the Bridge network. Telkom's servers just completely overloaded?

Hi,

So these load shedding times have me wondering... if i do put my router on UPS, does the exchange have all the necessary components on UPS too?

Gah, internet is pretty dead for me on Clareinch for the last few days. Anyone else having issues, or just me?

As far as I know yes, but I don't know for certain.

Noticed a few minor speed issues at different periods during the day, but latency is fine.

Thanks.. must admit i never check that... i just see shows buffering a lot, so i switch to downloaded content at that point to "save the day". I want to try another ISP later this eve. Murphys law says it will work.. then i sign up, and the next day its borked again...

I am having terrible times this past month.

I am on a 10meg line but not on "Imax" which i should be (according to the tech who came today)

He tried to change me over but was told that all the IMAX ports at the exchange are not working properly.

Its so frustrating I have line problems all the time in the last year I have had to log at least 8 - 10 faults.

Why cant they just sort it out once and for all!

Now I sit and just wait with pings of 999 - 1400 and linespeed of 0.4 (when it does not disconnect completely)

arrrrhhh

I haven't read this entire thread, it's quite long, so apologies if this has been answered before.

I've been in Claremont for about 5 months now, first had 2meg, got it upgraded to 4meg. Telkom then had to 'move' my ADSL to a different exchange for me to get 10meg. Currently only barely syncing at 6meg, often with a lot of packet loss and a very bad SNR in the mornings. Although whenever I check in the evenings speed seems fine as do my noise margins and so on.

Does anyone know how about the VDSL and fiber roll out? Is there a possibility of getting something a bit faster soon? The last time I spoke to Telkom on Twitter I was told that nothing was planned for my part of Claremont for the rest of this year... :-/

May be related, a new building is going up next to my block, with the wall coming up right next to, literally, the Telkom line that comes in to the complex. Could this be causing issues? Can anything be done about it?

If nothing else it's nice to see what some others in Claremont want faster connections :)

I've got the same poor SNR and occasional packet loss problems with some CRC errors. However at least I managed to get a 20mb line :/

As for the fibre interest, there is plenty around the Clareinch exchange. I just doubt anyone is going to rally the neighborhood to do anything about it.
