My electrician charged me R800 for a COC which included the solar installation

C of CT do not charge anything

Can give you his details. It is Paul and he is in Ottery
Is your system registered and how much did you have to pay to get it registered?

A simple admittance that you can not answer my question would suffice. It will stay a stealth CoCT tax to me until someone gives a proper reason why it exists for CoCt only.
What actual work your specific installer does for that fee is irrelevant.

It's not a tax, stealthy or otherwise, because the CoCT DOESN'T CHARGE FOR REGISTRATION.

You're paying for a service. It's capitalism dude.

Looking at the form you can complete it yourself but there is a section where the installer + a certified engineer need to complete to verify that your installed system is in accordance with the local (WC) and national standards. The fee Solar Advice charges likely covers the time for the installer + engineer to do this

Thanks, so it is just a special CoCT thing as expected. A once off stealth tax it is, this is not needed for other municipalities.

Other Munis do not explicitly request an engineer to check the installer's work (yet) so yes the registration is a CoCT specific thing. But again - CoCT does not charge - the time for the installer + engineer is what is charged for by SA

Edit: In other words if you have a mate who is a qualified engineer they can complete those sections for you (and not charge you) after checking what the installer does and you can submit by yourself with no fee charged

Zero percent of the fee goes to government. 100% of it goes into the pockets of the installer. It is pure, unrestricted capitalism. Not a tax in any version of any universe.

P.S. thank you for being such a ray of sunshine and providing such an entertaining thread.

This is one incredible stealth tax. It's so stealthy it's free.

Next time a plumber comes to fix my plumbing and demands money for that service I'm going to take a leaf out of Benedict's book and just scream about stealth taxes and socialism until he leaves.

It is socialism because CoCt is more socialist and forces me to pay someone for something that is not required. In capitalism you can choose not to buy a service, but for CoCt only you are forced to register and this process must be paid for and costs you an additional R6k that you do not have to pay for in other municipalities. If it was really required, all municipalities would have had this requirement.

Yes, it will have to be a plumber that I am forced to hire because CoCT said so and I`m not forced to hire in other municipalities.

A tax is a compulsory contribution to state revenue. You're not doing that here. You're paying an individual to perform a service for you. You're not paying the CoCT.

Buy a bloody dictionary.

Dance about all you want it changes nothing. It's not a tax my dude.

For someone so obsessed with socialism you'd think you'd know what tax is.
