CoCT`s crap solar policy.

I am assuming that I can not get a COC without paying for it, like tbunny is madly suggesting. And that this fee is for the COC or getting it, I might be wrong, these socialist rules are complicated.

Under what version of Gods Green earth is a certified electrician going to do a few hours work and hand out a CoC for free?
And no, the rules aren't complicated unless you're a blithering fscking idiot.

You nailed the problem.

Why is CoCT forcing this and other municipalities not? Oh yeah right, it is because CoCT knows it is going to happen the future, what a dumb reason. Now please give me a good reason idiot.

Actually all other municipalities force the CoC issue as well, you just kind of get away with it because enforcement is a bit poor.

Oh and your insurance company enforces it as well, unless you don't mind losing your home in a fire and them telling you to get bent.

You say they are forcing it, and not enforcing it. Which is it, if its not enforced it does not exist. @Mike did you pay the installer to get a COC? Any other non-CoCT solar houses that paid extra for the COC?

Tbunny can you show that insurance companies actually enforce this?

Because they are doing work on the main electrical components and there is a touchpoint with the grid then a COC is needed. I paid for my installer to do one because insurance asked for it in the event something goes wrong. Even on self-installs you need an electrician to check the work against national standards

CoC was issued for free as part of the installation cost and required for insurance. Other installers may charge for it. Didn't have to register with CoCT because I don't live there. You seem to be conflating two different things now...

Thank you for an adult answer. So it seems like if you want your house to be insured you have to pay to get a COC done, and this is an additional cost of +- R5-6k.

Yes it seems the fee might not bet for the COC, so what is the fee for then in CoCT? (asking in general, not to you).

No, you don't need that CoC to insure your home. However should you not have it and an electrical fire happens your insurer is unlikely to pay.

They're charging you that R5k-R6k to do the registration. Potentially a portion of that is the CoC, who knows. If you don't want to be charged that then do it yourself.

You need that CoC regardless. Always.

Nobody is enforcing a charge on you.

For the work they're doing on your behalf to register it.
What work are they doing for the registration on my behalf? It seems there is no info on that. What must I do to register it myself and what is the cost? It does seem like just another CoCT stealth tax.

Ask the company you are dealing with for a detailed quote with the cost breakdown that is included in the "registration fee" they are charging.

One of my neighbours just finalised his setup and the company registered it for him at CoCT free of charge. Seems to be an issue with the company you are using.

No idea. By the sounds of it it's just a form with the CoC as supporting documentation. Maybe I'm wrong and it's a hell of a painful process to justify that fee. Either that or it's just a rip-off by the installer.

As has been explained to you multiple bloody times now it's not a stealth tax. The CoCT doesn't get that money, the installer does. They don't have to pay a dime of that over to the city. The CoCT has been very clear on this, the registration is FREE.

My electrician charged me R800 for a COC which included the solar installation

C of CT do not charge anything

Can give you his details. It is Paul and he is in Ottery

A simple admittance that you can not answer my question would suffice. It will stay a stealth CoCT tax to me until someone gives a proper reason why it exists for CoCt only.

Looking at the form you can complete it yourself but there is a section where the installer + a certified engineer need to complete to verify that your installed system is in accordance with the local (WC) and national standards. The fee Solar Advice charges likely covers the time for the installer + engineer to do this
