I have 2 Capped (non shaped ) accounts. Live about 3-4 ks from Parow Exchange in CT.
Pay for 10 meg line which was giving problems so last year I requested telkom to downgrade me to 8 meg. Internet is so slow that i requested them to downgrade me to 6 meg and reset the port.
The downgrade doesn't appear to have helped. This morning I used the broadband speed test and these are the results for international

Test conducted on 18 November, 2011 11:52:02 AM

Download Speed: 202 kbps (25.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 469 kbps (58.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Latency: 338 ms

Any useful suggestions

Hi,

Please log in on your ADSL modem's web interface and post your ADSL statistics (attenuation, noise margins & line speed - both upstream & downstream) here.

Could you also run a speedtest by going to www.speedtest.net now, as well as in the early mornings (like 00:00)?

Your problem is most likely that you're on a congested Telkom Exchange. Here's the thread that is dedicated to congested Exchanges: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/364262-List-of-congested-exchanges
If this is the case, then there's nothing really that you can do, besides logging a fault that you're not getting what you're paying for.

Hear are my router stats

........................................DownStream...................UpStream
Connection Speed.................6144 kbps.....................639 kbps
Line Attenuation...................41.0 db..........................23.5 db
Noise Margin........................12.0 db..........................11.8 db

Those stats are fine.
I won't suggest that you upgrade to anything faster than 6Mbps though, because then your SNR margins would be too low to maintain a stable ADSL connection.

My guess is that the problem lies at the Exchange and not with your ISP account or ADSL line.

Many thanks for your feedback.

Do you think it would be worth my while asking a technician to come out?

I really cannot stand these pathetic low speeds. It takes forever to even load news24.

I think that having spent the last 2 months in Australia and listening to the people bitching about speeds we would dream of doesn't help

There is an issue with IS adsl accounts not sure if your ISP uses IS as their upstream provider.
I get NOC notices from IS. There is an outage today allthough most ISP's wont admit it.

Early Bird

Got up at 5h00 and ran the same speed test. Local download 5+meg International download 2.2 meg.
SO it would appear that the problem is with a congested exchange.
I'm going to phone them early tomorrow and ask someone to explain why I must pay for a service they aren't providing
